GOOD MORNING: I have some fatherly advice for people who object to their youngsters undergoing a weapons pat down before being seated in an airliner.
Find another means of transportation. This in response to objections posted online by a child’s father recently.
Two things this week really caught my attention, both small but both indicative of the problems we’re facing here in Franklin County as we try to pull ourselves back out of the economic recession that has been devastating over the last five years.
For some time, we’ve lamented the silly regulations -- not the necessary ones, mind you, but the silly ones that are pointless -- which slow and often stop economic development.
The look of Bickett Boulevard in Louisburg has changed a great deal since this photograph was taken back in 1963. The photo shows The Franklin Times building at the lower left with a used car dealership visible where a car wash now stands just north of the newspaper office. Of course, the biggest change in the last several decades has come on the west side of Bickett since the first of this year.

The Republican leadership of the General Assembly seems to have backed off for now on their plans to slash eligibility for NC PreK and completely privatize the program.
That’s welcome news, but not very reassuring since there is no indication of a change in philosophy among legislative leaders.

Franklin County’s unemployment rate remained in double digits with a slight increase, according to the most recently released information from the state.
The rise kept Franklin County in line with 94 other counties that saw their rates go up in January — the most recent data available.
Vance-Granville Community College awarded 328 scholarships to full-time students at an awards ceremony, held Feb. 22 in the college’s Civic Center.
In her welcoming remarks, Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the new president of VGCC, congratulated the scholarship recipients and thanked the donors who support the college’s Endowment Fund, many of whom were on hand to present their scholarships in person.
NASCENT STAGES. The first formed Science Olympiad team at Louisburg High School finished second at the regional competition of the North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) held at Duke University on March 10. The team’s finish qualified them for the state event, scheduled for April 27-28 at N.C. State University.
Deputies arrested a White Level man on charges that he used a pry bar during an attack.
Porfirio Munoz Salinas, 75, was charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
According to a report by Dep. J Maloney, Salinas became irate the afternoon of March 15 when someone began doing yardwork at a home in the 1600 block of East River Road.
US Army Pfc. Rashaun Pace-Evans graduated from AIT at Fort Gordon, Ga., on March 7 as a Distinguished Honor graduate (Delta Company) for Academic Excellence in the 25B Information Technology Specialist program, with a GAP of 93.
The following Franklin County students were named to the Kerr-Vance Academy Headmaster List/A/B Honor Roll for the third-quarter grading period.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College has seen its share of booming bats and powerful pitchers on the softball field through the years.
But that number dwindles considerably when the discussion is about players who shined as both sluggers and hurlers -- at least at the level Jamie Hockaday has during the 2012 campaign.

FRANKLINTON -- A 150-second routine that took nearly 10 months to perfect secured a trophy last weekend for the Franklinton High School varsity cheerleading squad.
Thanks to their successful routine, the Red Rams claimed the First Runner-Up Award in the Small Varsity, Non-Tumble Division at the Cheer Ltd. Cheer Nationals, which were held over three days at the Sheraton Convention Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Louisburg College moved within two victories of a title following a nail-biting victory over Mesa College in Thursday’s quarterfinals of the Division II National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament, which is being held in East Peoria, Ill.
After trailing by four points at halftime versus their foe from Arizona, Louisburg rallied for a 65-63 decision.
BUNN -- A pair of big innings proved to be the difference as Bunn defeated Corinth Holders 13-9 in the key Northern Carolina Conference baseball game on Tuesday on the BHS campus.
The Wildcats are now 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the NCC. After a slow start to the campaign, Bunn has won five straight diamond outings.

BUNN -- The annual The Franklin Times Franklin County Track and Field Meet has been moved due to the threat of poor weather today.
Instead, the event has been rescheduled for April 28 at 9 a.m. at the Bunn High School Football Field.
Franklin County’s middle school and high school squads will be in action.
CHAPEL HILL – Sherry Norris of Chapel Hill High School and Terry Frazier of Roanoke Rapids High School are the recipients of the seventh annual Toby Webb Coach of the Year Awards given by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
The two outstanding coaches will be recognized at the NCHSAA’s Annual Meeting on May 3 at the Smith Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

The weather was perfect last weekend as 25 players participated in The Miracle League of Franklin County Angels in the Outfield Training Mini-Clinic at the Louisburg High School Softball Field. Each of the players teamed up with one to three ‘buddies’, who assisted them through five different rotation stations. The day ended with a free hot dog luncheon. YOUNGSVILLE —Louie Levi Salazar, 92, died Saturday, March 17, 2012 at home. A celebration service will be held Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at Grace Assembly of God, 2405 Wait Avenue, Wake Forest. A second service and burial will be held in San Jose, Calif.
