The proposal to purchase the old Girl Scout camp and convert it into a county-owned park is comatose since the idea didn’t receive a second at this week’s county commission meeting.
If someone will attach a Do Not Resuscitate tag, the county can begin looking for a more suitable location.
The park is being funded largely by a bequest from the late Edgar Owens, a local businessman who left the county nearly $1 million for a park, preferably one with a “fishing hole.”
GOOD MORNING: There was/is a 70 percent chance we’d get a bit of rain last (Friday) night and/or this (Saturday) morning and Sunday as well, with daytime highs in the low 60’s Saturday, dropping back to 49 or 50 on Sunday before climbing back into the high 60’s to near 70 on Monday.
But you know how that goes – what you see is what you get.
Let’s see if any of this makes sense.
Since the early 1980s, we’ve been hearing talk of a Star Wars missile defense system that is supposed to discover, target and destroy incoming strategic missiles targeted at our country.
Begun by President Ronald Reagan in March, 1983, it’s impossible to determine how many billions of dollars have been spent on a system which we hope will never be used.
The Youngsville Woman’s Club has announced that it has partnered with the Franklin County and North Carolina Arts Councils by sponsoring a series of Grass Roots Arts Workshops called “Bringing the Arts to Youngsville 2011-2012.”
The goal of this endeavor has been to create an avenue for arts education, thus fostering knowledge and appreciation of art forms used from earlier generations, as well as exploring the cultural diversity within our communities.
Diane Brownstone , director of the Brownstone Book Fund, a private non-profit funded by the Brownstone Family Foundation, has chosen the Franklin County Library, through the State Library of North Carolina, to receive a gift of 100 children’s books.
Her interest in children’s services at the library stems from the public library of her youth.
ZEBULON - Eliza Todd Heath, 97, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 20, at Zebulon First Baptist Church, Zebulon.
WAKE FOREST - Carlton Lee Nelson died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 in Franklin County. A service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Hope Lutheran Church, 3525 Rogers Road, Wake Forest.
LOUISBURG – Marvin Leon Pernell, 75, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Alert Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the burial following in the Pernell family cemetery.
CASTALIA - Owen Richardson, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. Arrangements by William Toney’s Funeral Home, Spring Hope.
LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Fred Simmons, 87, who died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church in Pollocksville, with the Rev. C. B. Chadwick officiating. The Rev. Michael Burden is pastor. Burial will follow in the Simmons family cemetery.
LOUISBURG – Mrs. Margaret Watkins Edwards, 87, died January 16. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. C. Edwards Jr.; her parents, Maylon E. Watkins and Mary Etta Tharrington Watkins, and stepmother, Helen Parrish Watkins, as well as brothers, M.E. and Charles Watkins, and sisters, Mary Helen Watkins and Mildred Cook.

Not when it means the Wildcats are alone at the top of the Northern Carolina Conference boys basketball standings.

WENDELL -- Almost halfway into the Northern Carolina Conference girls basketball schedule, one team stands alone at the top of the standings.
It’s the Bunn Ladycats.
This shouldn’t be a surprise, as Bunn is the defending NCC regular season and tournament champion.

WARRENTON -- Third place was at stake in the Northern Carolina Conference when upstart Louisburg traveled to Warren County for a key girls basketball showdown Thursday night.
Bunn (1) and Franklinton (2) are currently entrenched at the top of the league standings, but LHS had a chance to make a big move into third with a victory.
BUNN -- The Bunn Youth Recreation League is currently accepting signups for its upcoming Baseball/Softball/T-Ball seasons.
Registration will be held each Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30-8 p.m. through Feb. 25.
