ROCKY MOUNT -- From beginning to end, the Nash Central Bulldogs have held an edge over the Bunn Wildcats during non-conference boys basketball action this month.
The Bulldogs, however, took two different routes on their way to a 2-0 season sweep over the Wildcats.
In the initial meeting two weeks ago, Nash Central came through with a late rally to secure a key victory at the Bunn Dome.

Ladycats get past Bulldogs
ROCKY MOUNT -- Heading into the fourth quarter, the Bunn Ladycats appeared to be well on their way -- and in comfortable fashion -- to finishing off a season sweep against Nash Central in girls high school basketball action.
Bunn had rallied late to win the initial meeting two weeks ago, but last Friday’s rematch featured a strong early surge from the Ladycats, who didn’t let up through three periods.

FHS defeats the Firebirds
FRANKLINTON-- Franklinton made some big plays down the stretch and was able to hold on to defeat Southern Nash by a 47-41 margin last Friday in a non-conference boys basketball event at the historic FHS Gymnasium.
The Red Rams had fallen at Southern Nash two weeks earlier, but FHS avoided a season sweep behind 13 points from Bo Bagwell and 12 markers from Kevin Williams.

BUNN – Ruby McMullen Plyler, 98, died Thursday morning, Dec. 9, 2010. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today (Saturday, Dec. 11) at Longview United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Margaret Long and the Rev. Rhonda Maurer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bunn Memorial Gardens.

Police arrested a 17-year-old Louisburg High school student charged with having a gun on campus.
According to Police Capt. Jason Abbott and the school system, students recognized something amiss and notified administrators that the student had something suspicious in his possession.

Franklinton woman killed in car wreck
A Franklinton woman was killed this week following a crash in Wake County.
According to reports, Krystal Strother, 28, was driving long I-540 when she lost control of the 2003 Honda she was driving.
The car swerved to the left, went underneath median cables and she drove into the eastbound lanes and oncoming traffic.

From a somber resolution honoring a founding member to a funny address by a self-described “Yellow Dog Democrat,” the holiday-decorated Person Place came alive Thursday night at the Preservation Society’s annual meeting.
The group passed a resolution honoring the late Betty Chauvin Hochenedel McKinne as “the inspiration and driving force” in saving the historic Person Place Home on the campus of Louisburg College.

School bus wreck sends students to hospital
Seven Bunn Middle School students were taken to the hospital at about noon on Friday following a school bus accident in Wake County.
According to school system spokesperson Joseph Baisley, two buses were returning from Wake Forest Rolesville High when one was involved in an accident.

BUNN — A town officer was fired last month amid allegations that he took indecent liberties with a minor.
Police Chief Kent Winstead confirmed that James Perry was terminated following an internal investigation into the allegation brought forward by the guardian of a teenager on Nov. 15.

YOUNGSVILLE — Commissioners decided to wait until the spring thaw to determine how it spends money to repair roads and sidewalks.
Town Clerk Brenda Robbins advised the board that it had $35,254.44 available through the state Street Aid Program  to improve roads, sidewalks and build new ones.

Franklin Regional wins award for outstanding improvement
Franklin Regional Medical Center was recently awarded a Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) award for Most Outstanding Improvement for 2010.
This recognition was awarded to hospitals in North Carolina that showed the most improved overall SCIP performance, meeting the nationally recognized best practices for surgical patients.

FSA announces committee election results for county
The Farm Service Agency County Committee Election was held on Dec. 6.  This year’s election was held in Local Administrative Area 2, consisting of Cedar Rock, Cypress Creek, Gold Mine and Sandy Creek townships. 
Henry Nelms was re-elected to the county committee for a three-year term.  He will assume his committee duties on Jan. 1.

Franklin County designated a natural disaster area
On Nov. 30, the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated Franklin County and 41 other counties as natural disaster areas due to losses caused by drought and excessive heat that occurred May 1 – Oct. 1, 2010.
“President Obama and I understand these conditions caused severe damage to a wide variety of crops and prevented farmers from harvesting these crops,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
