School system coping with state fund cuts

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County school officials and staff are trying to determine how the State Department of Public Instruction stuck a lump of coal in their holiday stocking.
The State Department of Public Instruction (DPI) sent school finance staff an email on Nov. 18 -- a Friday -- stating that Franklin County public schools had lost 559 students to Wake Prep, resulting in a loss of $3.5 million that's allotted for those students.

Novozymes buys property once eyed for Franklinton development

FRANKLINTON -- A piece of property that was once a key part of extending the limits and opportunities for Franklinton was sold last week.
And, according to a story in the Triangle Business Journal, its new owner, Novozymes, has no plans to develop it.
In December 2021, Franklinton commissioners agreed to petition Franklin County, on behalf of Franklinton Development LLC, to extend the town's extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction to include the 51.55 acre site at N.C. 56 and Mays Crossroads -- a proposed development site across from Novozymes.

Franklinton, Franklin County provide early Christmas
Franklinton, Franklin County provide early Christmas

I usually wait until the week of Christmas to write this column, but I'm going to take a cue from the town of Franklinton and Franklin County and bring some early Christmas cheer.
If you read The Franklin Times back in November, you may remember that I wrote a story about how the town of Franklinton agreed to hold up their end of the bargain to develop a pedestrian trail from the historic train depot in Franklinton to Novozymes.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:
I am more than a little surprised to see how the new intersection of US 401 and Hwy 98 is being constructed. Not like the less-traveled roads that intersect US 401 further south, such as E. Young Street or Pulley Town Road, Hwy 98 is a heavily traveled highway and the main road to points east of Wake Forest.

BUNN -- Few sports are harder to repeat as league champions than in middle school football.

State launches telemedicine program to increase access to COVID-19 treatment

RALEIGH -- People who test positive for COVID-19, particularly those who are uninsured or don't have a primary care doctor, will have better access to treatments thanks to a time-limited telemedicine program launched by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with StarMed Healthcare.
After a positive test, early treatment is key to avoiding severe illness and hospitalizations, and treatment may even reduce complications from post-COVID conditions, also called long COVID.
