COL. LARRY EDWARD TETTERTON (RET.)
January 24, 1936 - August 28, 2018

LOUISBURG - Larry E. Tetterton died peacefully on August 28, 2018 at the age of 82. Larry was raised in Bethel by his parents, Jesse and Marena Andrews Tetterton. Larry grew up appreciating the value of hard work and the importance of serving God, country, family, and others.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Cindy Tetterton; sisters, Ernestine T. Ross, Eleanor T. Chelberg, and Ruby T. Gilbert; brothers, Jesse Tetterton, Jr. and Carl Tetterton. His surviving family members include his wife, Barbara Bunn Tetterton; his son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Allyson Tetterton of Wake Forest; sister, Lois T. Manning of Danville, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

Larry's life was dedicated to the service of others and his community. Following graduation from Bethel High School, Larry attended Louisburg College where he met his future wife, Barbara Bunn. Larry obtained a Bachelor in Science and a Masters from NC State University. While serving our nation, Larry graduated from the United States Army War College.

After serving our country for 33 years, Larry retired from the US Army Reserve. Larry worked through the ranks in the Army and rose to the rank of Colonel. Numerous decorations where bestowed upon Larry during his service which included the following medals: National Defense Service, Army Commendation, Meritorious Service, Good Conduct, Army Reserve Component Achievement with overseas Training, US Legion of Merit, and NC National Guard Legion of Merit.

Larry was dedicated to his beloved Franklin County where he established a residence after marrying Barbara. He served as Chairman of the Franklin County Board of Elections, Board of Education, Planning Board, and Economic Development Board. Larry also served as the past Commander of Franklin County Civil Air Patrol. Larry enjoyed working with and for the American Legion where he held the positions of Chairman for the Legislative Liaison Committee for NC and was past Commander of the American Legion Post 105. During his tenure as the past Commander, Larry established a permanent headquarters for Post 105. Serving our country as an Army Reservist was not the only avenue Larry utilized to defend and promote our constitutional rights as he was devoted to the democratic process. Larry demonstrated his devotion through his work with the Franklin County Democratic Party as the past Chairman of the precinct and past President of Chapter of Senior Democrats of NC. Larry was also a Franklin County Democrat Party Club 100 member.

New Hope Christian Church was an important part of Larry's life as he was a Christian in every sense of the word. Until his recent illness, Larry was an active member of the church and in the past served as Chairman on the major Boards and Committees. He also served as a Sunday school teacher for numerous years. Larry also held a public job as an Assistant Director of Marketing with the NC Department of Agriculture until his retirement in April of 1990. He received The Order of Long Leaf Pine award, which is the highest award honoring civilians for their services in NC.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory at 103 W. Franklin St., Louisburg, NC. Larry will be laid to rest on September 1, 2018, which would have been his 62nd wedding anniversary. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at New Hope Christian Church at 2779 NC Hwy 98 W., Louisburg, NC 27549. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
