Recreation advisory board to visit potential park sites
The county’s parks and recreation advisory board plans to take a field trip next month.
Since commissioners rejected the board’s recommendation to use the old Girl Scout site for a new county park, the parks and recreation office has received interest from people representing seven properties that could meet Edgar Owens’ dying request.

More people finding work
Unemployment rates fell in 98 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in March, including Franklin County.
Franklin County went from a rate of 9.8 percent in February to 9 percent in March — the most recent figures available.
Unemployment rates declined in 85 counties, increased in 14 and, remained the same in one when compared to the same month last year.

Franklin County’s three high school programs don’t compete in the pole vault, so that event was held earlier this week in Johnston County -- and featured all Corinth Holders participants, with the exception of one youngster from North Johnston.

LOUISBURG -- The outcome of the Northern Carolina Conference baseball standings could be determined Monday when Bunn travels to Louisburg for a huge, late-season NCC showdown.
The event was originally supposed to be played Friday, but was pushed back three days due to poor field conditions at Warrior Field.

LC’s Bridgers nabs national hill award
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College freshman Traci Bridgers has been selected as the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played April 16-22.
Bridgers, who hails from nearby Princeton, earned back-to-back shutout victories last week against Patrick Henry Community College and the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie.

Five Red Rams -- a league high -- qualified for the upcoming Class 2-A Regionals by virtue of their strong tourney performances.

As a youngster, Allen de Hart discovered a love for the outdoors.
And his family, particularly his grandfather, taught him about sharing that love and whatever else he could to make his community better.
This coming Thursday, those passions will literally come into bloom as a ceremony will mark his family’s dedication of the De Hart Botanical Gardens to Louisburg College — an institution from which he retired as a professor.

BHS to honor Johnny Alford
The new auditorium at Bunn High School will be named in honor of Johnny Alford, a man with deep ties to both that school and to public education in Franklin County.
The county board of education voted unanimously Monday night that the facility be named for Alford, a former Bunn High principal and a former member of the county school board.
