Franklin County’s airport authority learned this week that it was awarded half the amount of a grant it would need to complete an expansion project.
Members of the Triangle North Executive Airport board said they needed to make sure the state Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division would give them the other $400,000 before they asked county commissioners for approval to move forward.
Samaria M. Carter participated in the 8th annual Miss Nu Epsilon Cotillion 2011, sponsored by the Nu Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Chi Sorority Inc. of Louisburg on Nov. 5. She was awarded first runner-up.
Samaria is the daughter of Samantha Branch-Thompson and Dietrich Thompson of Henderson and Harold and Doreen Carter of Warrenton.

It’s rare when a “finding” in an auditor’s report of a government department generates smiles (and a few chuckles) from those hearing the report.
That’s exactly what happened this week when an auditor presented his complex, 52-page analysis of Franklin County Schools.
It’s been a tragic week here in Franklin County, made worse because it has happened so close to Christmas and the holiday season.
There has been a murder-suicide and an attempted murder-suicide, incidents that have left three young people dead and another with a life-altering experience.
GOOD MORNING: I bumped into former Louisburg Police Chief Earl Tharrington at the grocery store Thursday and he remarked how much I had “mellowed” since those days when I was “affectionately” known as “that little wirehaired (crew cut) expletive at The Franklin Times. Nowadays, I’m known by some as “that old bald-headed you know what.”
Much of the discussion concerning Franklin Regional Medical Center (FRMC) is focused on where it may ultimately exist. The more relevant question is whether it will continue to exist at all.
Let’s start with what everyone can agree on. It is better to have a hospital in Franklin County than to have none. The hospital plays a critical role, supporting the quality of life and the economic vitality of the county.

I am writing to you about domestic violence in Franklin County. Whatever happened to evidence-based prosecution? I know that law enforcement, magistrates and assistant district attorneys were involved with some training for this a few years ago.

RALEIGH - James Edward “Eddie” Kelly, 46, of Raleigh, passed away Wednesday morning, December 14, 2011 at Duke-Raleigh Hospital.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects alleged to have chased two men and a child inside a home at gunpoint.
Jamal Smith reported the evening of Dec. 14 that he was returning to his Bunn Elementary School Road home with his four-year-old son and a friend when, as they exited the vehicle to head for the house, he heard footsteps behind him.
Some people love to go to parades, and others would not have anything to do with them. But, if there is a child, a grandchild, or a family member participating in it, the effort is made, and with good results most of the time.
You can see the faces of proud parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents as they view their friends or loved ones participating in a parade.

LOUISBURG -- If the result of the second time around is any indication, the Louisburg Lady Warriors have made significant progress during the early course of the 2011-12 girls basketball campaign.
LHS, under coach Brett Kiger, had fallen to Southern Vance by a whopping 34 points in the second game of the season.

STANHOPE -- With leading scorer Whitney Bunn unavailable due to illness, Bunn High School girls basketball coach Chuck Mann relied on a long-time friend Wednesday.
Defense.
Bunn has been known for its intense defensive prowess during Mann’s tenure, and that would have to be a key during Wednesday’s non-conference rematch against Southern Nash.

LOUISBURG -- The postseason accolades continue to pour in for Louisburg College’s Rasheed Williams -- and this was the biggest one of all.
Williams, LC’s standout sophomore running back, has been selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association First Team Football All-America Squad.
CARY -- Bunn High School will participate in the Mix 101.5 Girls Holiday Invitational Tournament as part of the annual HighSchoolOT.com Tournament.
The eight-team girls event will be held from Dec. 26-28. All first-round games will be held at Cary Academy.
The semifinals and finals will be staged at Broughton High School, while loser’s bracket teams will continue to play at Cary Academy.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College has never lost to the fledgling Sandhills CC program on the basketball court -- but LC head coach Mark Vanderslice still felt a bit of queasiness heading into Tuesday’s showdown between the schools.
After all, Sandhills has developed into a Division III junior college powerhouse -- and the Flyers had yet to lose this year.
FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton is expected to be a contender in the Northern Carolina Conference girls basketball standings during the 2011-12 season.
FHS began its NCC schedule in style Wednesday as the Lady Rams topped North Johnston by a 34-25 margin in the league opener for both clubs at the new FHS Gymnasium.
