As he was getting sworn in as the county’s new sheriff, Jerry Jones had already hit the ground running, instituting a new command staff.
Jack Joyner, Jones’ right hand man during his first tenure, was hired as the department’s chief deputy on Friday.

In an email sent out on Monday evening, Darnell Batton informed the board and staff that his partner, David Guin, will serve as the new sheriff’s attorney.

Responders engage in fiery competition
There were plenty of small blazes at the Louisburg Moose Lodge.
And there were plenty of firefighters and other emergency responders around.
But rather than douse the flames, they put chicken and pork on top, simmering them to perfection.
The result was the first United Way Siren Cook-off Contest, an event coordinated by Jeremy Neal that, at once, pitted the county’s emergency responders against each other and brought a community together.

School board moves closer to old high school remodel
The Franklin County Board of Education took another step along a road it began in 2008, the reworking of the former Franklinton High School into a middle school.
In 2008, voters approved a bond issue that created a new Franklinton High School, which opened this fall, and the plans began for converting the old FHS in downtown Franklinton into a middle school.

Franklin County emergency crews responded to an accident at a Youngsville recreational farm.
According to reports, fire, emergency services and law enforcement personnel responded to a low-speed collision between a tractor pulling people on a hay ride and the train at Hill Ridge Farms.
According to law enforcement, someone driving the tractor was following another tractor as it crossed the train track.

Power knocked out by felled tree
Nearly 1,000 Louisburg area Progress Energy customers lost power on Monday afternoon when a primary line went down.
According to Scott Sutton with Progress Energy and witnesses, a contracting crew was cutting down a large Black Gum tree near power lines along N.C. 56 and East River Road when the tree fell on the line.

Youngsville expects opposition to special-use permit
YOUNGSVILLE — Town officials will host its next meeting at the town’s Community House, expecting a large crowd that wants to know about a company’s plans to test ballistic concrete products that are used in live fire training.
Amidon Contracting Solutions Inc. manufactures the concrete products that military bases and others in law enforcement use when conducting live round training in settings that simulate urban warfare.

I’ve sort of paid attention from afar to this phenomenon of public protests across the country. It started with “Occupy Wall Street.”
From what I gather, they are a series of demonstrations in New York City, with people protesting against social injustice, economic inequality, corporate greed and, plainly, poor government.

Class warfare or healthy debate?
Whoever suggests increasing taxes on the rich is engaging in class warfare according to the right. We don’t condone warfare but it is time to discuss why the middle class has gotten squeezed and is shrinking, why the percentage of poor is increasing rapidly and why the top five percent has actually gained wealth.
