This is all about Special Olympics. What better place could there be to put your money to work? Many adults and children have been able to bring out their best while participating in Special Olympics. The benefits are truly amazing for these special citizens who inspire people of all ages to open their minds.
A grand opening has been scheduled to introduce area residents to the new American Cancer Society Cancer Resource Center in Louisburg. The opening is set for noon Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Franklin County Cancer Center on Jolly Street. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m., during the opening festivities.

This week, in a small county in Tennessee, the fire department stood silently by while a man’s mobile home burned to the ground because he hadn’t paid the $75 annual fire fee demanded by the nearest town.
The incident happened in Obion County, Tenn., and the nearest town was South Fulton.
You’ve got to strike while the iron is hot.
That old saying goes back to the days of the blacksmith working over hot coals, hopefully in the shade of a tree, fashioning the essentials of early life from bars of iron.
But it still applies — in a slightly different manner although you’d never convince some people of that these days.

Due to illness, I am late responding to Mark Warren’s letter in The Franklin Times a few weeks ago concerning the clear-cutting of the old historic Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Warren, it was a little too little, a little too late. Questions were not answered.
The descendants of Solomon and Serena Stokes Mitchell held their ninth bi-annual reunion Aug. 6-8. More than 150 descendants traveled from Georgia, South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and different cities throughout North Carolina.

Tim Nine posts some flyers to the back of his chariot-inspired trike bike before making fish-plate and other deliveries for the Franklin County Shrine Club on Wednesday during the Franklin County Shrine Club Fish Fry, the group’s annual fund-raiser. The proceeds benefit a network of 22 Shriners’ Hospitals for Children, which care for crippled and burned children.
Franklin Regional Medical Center opened its doors for Ladies Night Out on Thursday, providing health information as part of efforts to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and women’s health, overall. The event mixed fun and pampering, including spa-like activities and refreshments, with medical education and information. Only one thing has been established in the Northern Carolina Conference boys soccer standings -- and that’s the fact that long-time powerhouse Roanoke Rapids is once again the team to beat.
RRHS is currently 6-0-1 and in first place in the NCC heading into a visit to Louisburg this coming Monday evening at Joyner Park.

BUNN -- Bunn served up a Northern Carolina Conference regular season championship -- literally -- on Tuesday as part of the school’s annual Senior Night festivities.
Using its jump-serving prowess, the Ladycats had a distinct advantage over rival Louisburg and went on to defeat the Lady Warriors by a 25-15, 25-21 and 25-20 margin at the Bunn Dome.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College may find itself in an unusual role when the Region X Men’s Soccer Tournament kicks off at the end of the month in Wilmington.
Usually the top seed for the annul event, the Hurricanes will be far behind in the seeding pack following an up-and-down regular season of action.
Shock waves were sent through The Franklin Times Fantasy Football League this week following the unlikely trade of Randy Moss from the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings.
This trade was crucial in the league, as it involves the movement of Moss, who is Carey Johnson’s No. 1 wide receiver.

Northwest Halifax’s Bryant has dominated this year’s girls races in the NCC, and Bunn’s Perry has done the same in boys competition.

LC second-year head coach Andy Stokes has only 13 players on his roster this fall -- and that number can go down when an injury, illness or family emergency comes up.
LOUISBURG -- Terrell Lane held off a late Eaton-Johnson 2-point attempt and went on a claim a 22-20 victory over the Cougars in a Middle Athletic Conference football matchup on Wednesday at historic Patterson Field on the campus of Louisburg High School.
A.J. Collier and Dontae Rogers were among the touchdown scorers for the Tornadoes, who improved to 3-1 overall.
KENLY -- Bunn suffered its first regular season volleyball loss in the Northern Carolina Conference in four years on Thursday at North Johnston.
Coming off Tuesday’s emotional Senior Night home decision over rival Louisburg, the Ladycats were stopped in five games against the North Johnston Lady Panthers.

Hannah and Matthew Stover of Willow Spring are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Ava Marie Stover, at Rex Hospital, Raleigh, on Aug. 3, 2010, weighing 8 lbs. She was 21 1/2 inches long.
Grandparents are Susan (Wood) and Timothy P. O’Daniel of Raleigh., Sheila (Spencer) Stover of Bunn, and Lt. Col. (AF ret) Jack Stover of Littleton.
