Nearly invisible in the highly partisan political storm that is preceding the November General Election is an important constitutional amendment that will face North Carolina voters.
At a time when partisan politics are white hot and passions are running high, it may prove difficult to get voters to focus on the more mundane, nuts-and-bolts part of state government that can, in the long run, make far more difference than any other individual race.
GOOD MORNING: First off this morning I want to say “Welcome Back” to the verbal wars and pages of The Franklin Times to Clara Wright Frazier, whose “Why Build” letter to the editor appeared in last Saturday’s edition. We’ve missed you Clara and it’s good to learn that you’ve “returned to civilization,” as you put it, even though I disagree with your reasoning regarding the building of a home for our early college high school program.
I read this past weekend a story that was most troubling.
It was about the family of a soldier who was killed in Iraq.
According to the story, the families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are upset with rules of engagement they say make their sons, daughters, husbands and wives sitting ducks.

RALEIGH – A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association is being described as “surprising” because it undercuts the promise of ObamaCare to cut health care costs by reducing emergency-room visits.
I have no doubt that some politicians and activists in North Carolina and beyond have found the study’s conclusions surprising.
Novozymes, which operates a plant in Franklinton, has become a founding member of The Sustainability Consortium, a new global organization with aims to improve the sustainability of consumer products.
The company will join a diverse group of academics, governments, non-government organizations and businesses to fulfill The Sustainability Consortium’s mission of driving a new generation of products and supply networks that address environmental, social and economic imperatives.
The Ugandan Orphans Choir will be performing a free concert at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4272 US Highway 401 N., Louisburg, on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. This special concert is in celebration of Children’s Sabbath. These children were some of the neediest children in Uganda. Now, they are the fortunate few that have been rescued from a life of hunger and poverty and given the opportunity for education and spiritual development.

YOUNGSVILLE —Harvey Allen Hall, 50, formerly of Louisburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday Sept. 9, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
Lynn Chapman, RN, MHA, BSN, NE-BC, joined the Franklin Regional Medical Center administration as interim chief nursing officer (CNO), effective Aug. 23.
Chapman comes to Franklin Regional from another Novant facility, Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, where she is a senior director of nursing operations.
Steven A. “Andy” Darnell, a staff accountant with Pittard Perry & Crone, Inc. in their New Bern office, has successfully passed all four parts of the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Exam and has earned the designation of Certified Public Accountant.
Darnell is a 2009 honors graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, earning his Master of Science in accounting.

Tuwandy R. Harris and Phillip A. Holden of Louisburg are proud to announce the birth of their son, Zarius Ja’Shon Holden, born Aug. 25, 2010 at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. He weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.

FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton’s newfound big-play capability out of the spread met Ravenscroft’s always-innovative attack for what would prove to be an explosive non-league showdown last Friday at the FHS Football Field.
Ravenscroft went ahead for good early in the fourth quarter, but the outcome wasn’t decided until the Red Rams were stopped on downs in Ravens’ territory with two minutes remaining.
RALEIGH -- Cardinal Gibbons broke open a tight game by scoring 10 points in the final 4:05 to top Louisburg by a 37-20 margin in a prep football showdown Friday on the CGHS campus.
Louisburg, now 0-2 on the season, never led in the second half, but the Warriors came back to within 27-20 on a 1-yard plunge from Rommaine Gobourne with 6:15 remaining in the non-conference matchup.
HENDERSON -- Louisburg High School stepped out of conference action last Thursday to take on Southern Vance in girls tennis matchup at Fox Pond Park.
The host Lady Raiders earned a 7-2 decision over Louisburg as the Lady Warriors were unable to claim a victory in any of the six singles matches.
