Tax-cutting tax hike?
RALEIGH – In several North Carolina counties where there will be a quarter-cent sales tax hike on the ballot in 2010, advocates have adopted the strategy with the best record of success: sell a tax hike by promising a tax cut.
If that sounds like a contradiction, then I chose the right words. It is a contradiction. But that doesn’t mean it lacks rhetorical effectiveness.

Who will report the news?
The news business is in free fall. Ad revenues for newspapers are dropping precipitously and papers are responding by cutting staff, eliminating circulation coverage and reducing news content. It is no wonder subscriptions, especially among those under 40, are dwindling. The future for newspapers is so threatened we are told some papers are considering becoming non-profits to receive charitable grants and there is even a move for legislation to provide subsidies to the industry, a horrible idea for many reasons.

Vargas participates in Operation Unified Response
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Alejandro E. Vargas, son of Ruth I. Diaz of Louisburg and Jose A. Vargas of Lehigh Acres, Fla., recently participated in Operation Unified Response as part of the Bataan Amphibious Relief Mission. Operation Unified Response is a joint U.S. military effort designed to provide relief in response to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation Jan. 12. USS Bataan (LHD 5) is homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Man arrested in drive-by shooting
Franklinton police arrested a man they allege was responsible for a drive-by shooting.
Police Chief John Green said Rashawn Arrington, 23, turned himself in Monday night.
Arrington was charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, possession firearm by felon, possession of crack cocaine, discharging a firearm with city limits, and carrying a firearm to the terror of the public.

FHS girls get past Warriors
LOUISBURG -- Lindsay Dehart hoped that efficiency would be the name of her team’s game when the Franklinton Lady Rams traveled to Louisburg last Friday for a key Northern Carolina Conference fast-pitch softball matchup.
After all, Franklinton had swept LHS in two games last year, including a no-hitter that was thrown by Lady Rams’ ace Morgan Tharrington.
