Several weeks ago, I wrote about my never-ending quest to catch a T-shirt or a baseball at a professional sporting event -- with an emphasis on my string of futilities at the Carolina Mudcats’ Five County Stadium.

BHS rolls past Panthers
STEM -- Bunn collected a whopping 525 yards of total offense and went on to top host Granville Central by a 45-18 margin in a non-league football game last Friday night.
BHS, now 2-1 overall, had 442 yards on the ground to go with 83 through the air.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- With heavy winds swirling from the aftermath of Hurricane Earl, playing conditions were less-than-admirable for Louisburg College’s season-opening football game last Saturday at Erie Community College.
With winds often reaching over 30 miles per hour, LC head coach John Sala figured the team that ran the ball best -- and defended the run -- would come out on top.

Annual Patrol Stroll scheduled
RALEIGH -- The Fourth Annual Patrol Stroll 5-K Road Race will be held Sept. 25 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The event will start at the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Training Academy, which is located at 3318 Garner Road in Raleigh.
All proceeds will benefit Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

SALISBURY, MD. -- North Carolina Wesleyan College’s football team kicked off its 2010 season last Saturday night at Salisbury University, dropping a tough 13-7 decision to the host Sea Gulls.
For Salisbury, the conquest avenged a 24-17 loss to the Battling Bishops during the 2009 season and evened the all-time series at one win apiece.

Smokies slide past Mudcats
ZEBULON -- The Tennessee Smokies broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the eighth to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 in front of a crowd of 6,871 fans at Five County Stadium on Sunday night.
Tennessee (43-26) broke a scoreless game in the top of fifth when Tony Thomas homered off Carolina starter, James Avery and the Smokies took a 1-0 lead.

LOUISBURG - Lula Elizabeth Pearce Cash, 93, of Louisburg, died Thursday, September 2, 2010 at Hillside Nursing Center. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Annie Wheeler Pearce and S. Talmadge Pearce. Mrs. Cash was a long-time member of Flat Rock Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and helped with Vacation Bible School for many years and was a charter member of William B. Barrow Chapter #39 Order of the Eastern Star.

Country 102’s sound, unique for its country twang and local color, turned to static this week.
Aug. 31 marked the last broadcast for the FM station as Curtis Media group pulled the plug after six years of ownership.
“It was six years of losing money,” said Don Curtis, founder of Curtis Media Group, which bought the station from Mollie Evans and the Evans family back in 2003.

Arrests made in Louisburg break-ins
Police arrested two Louisburg residents accused of targeting downtown businesses, the bulk of which occurred last weekend.
Investigators arrested Damon Latez Evans, 17, and Altee David Williams, 26, on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, respectively, charging them with five counts of breaking and entering and larceny.

J. Andrews Smith -- known as ‘Jerry’ to his close friends and ‘Duck’ to even closer friends — was a resident at the Free Will Baptist Children’s Home in Nash County when Drake was a coach  at Middlesex High School.

Teen pleads guilty to burglary
A Youngsville teenager was sentenced to at least a year in jail, the result of a plea in a case that began with allegations of sexual battery.
Joshua Kyle Jackson, 19, pled guilty to second-degree burglary in Franklin County Superior Court this week.

Medical clinic to open in Centerville
Proprietors of a new medical clinic will introduce themselves to the Franklin County community this weekend.
Beckford Centerville Medical Clinic will begin serving residents in the immediate and adjoining areas beginning in October.
The practice, which will serve patients with and without insurance, will try to fill the needs of rural, family health care.

Committee of 100 and Louisburg reach agreement
The Franklin County Committee of 100 approved a loan maintenance agreement between the town of Louisburg and the committee on Thursday morning.
The agreement provides for the Committee of 100 to administer a U.S. Department of Agriculture loan of $50,000  to Louisburg Gardens nursing home.

Franklinton Police arrest Raleigh man for transporting drugs
Sheriff’s deputies arrested  break-in suspects following a chase earlier this week.
According to a report by Det. Kevin White, he was patrolling Hart Road on Aug. 30 in the vicinity of a residence that had previously been broken into when he came across a suspicious vehicle.
