This motorcycle sustained only a few scratches after Virginia Ortiz Garcia, 40, made a left turn from Jolly Street onto Bickett Boulevard, pulling into the path of the bike’s rider, David McCracken, 44, of Louisburg, who is in the background on the stretcher. He was taken to the hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening. Garcia was charged with making an improper left turn.
Boy, we certainly hope that the special advisory panel Gov. Bev Perdue appointed to make recommendations on the Highway Patrol is an all-volunteer bunch!
Looking over the first of their few recommendations is a cause for pause — and literally begs the question: Isn’t this all just common sense?
GOOD MORNING: One might think that what with current troubles at the SBI and SHP, that we had trouble enough here in North Carolina, but that was before Hurricane Earl posed a threat to Cape Hatteras and other areas along the Outer Banks Thursday night.

FRANKLINTON —Odell Wilder Perry, 84, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at Louisburg Nursing Center. Funeral services were Wednesday, Sept. 1, at First Baptist Church in Franklinton, with the Rev. Jeanette Pender officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Andrew Kronenberg, a cardiologist at Franklin Regional Medical Center, educates high cholesterol patients every day. And with September being national cholesterol education month, he wants to remind people how important it is to learn how to detect high cholesterol and tips to prevent it.
Too bad. When the economy does not go well, guess what are the first things to suffer in the education of our children? You guessed it, art and music.
Art and music, as I have commented in previous articles, are essential to the development of a child who is going to appreciate his or her own culture and the culture of other human beings who may not speak his or her own language.
National data shows an increase in the percentage of non-drinkers entering college.
As Louisburg College students arrive on campus for the first time this fall, they will face a number of pressing transitional issues, including the decision of whether or not to drink. However, emerging data indicates that an increasing number of students are choosing to refrain from alcohol use and are seeking activities where alcohol is not the central focus.
STANHOPE -- Bunn has been away from home more often than not during the early portion of the 2010 boys soccer season -- and the Wildcats have responded with several strong performances.

FRANKLINTON -- Two teams that couldn’t be more different than their 2009 incarnations met Thursday for a key, early-season Northern Carolina Conference volleyball showdown.
Veteran Bunn head coach Henry Jones will be the first to admit that his current Ladycats don’t have the hitting power as some of his past clubs, including last year’s hard-hitting contingent, which won the NCC regular season and tournament championships.

FRANKLINTON -- Jordan Germano didn’t know what to fully expect when he took the Franklinton High School boys soccer coaching position in July.
After all, Germano is from New York State, though he had heard about Franklinton’s tradition of success during the interview process.
Maybe I’m showing my age by quoting a legendary song from Ten Years After entitled ‘I’d Love To Change The World’.
The lyrics go like this -- “I’d love to change the world, but I don’t know what to do. So I’ll leave it up to you.’’
Which reminds me of the plight of the Franklinton High School volleyball program since I’ve arrived in 1996.

LOUISBURG -- In two short seasons as Louisburg College’s head football coach, John Sala has transformed the Hurricanes into a Top 20-type program, developed a ‘Character First’ system for his players and led the way for LC to make a much-needed alignment with the Northeast Football Conference.

Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club NCNC.
Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the race at 8:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow.
The start/finish will be at the Louisburg College Auditorium on North Main St.

LOUISBURG -- Since she has only been in Franklin County for just over one month, Franklinton first-year volleyball coach Emily Regan might not have fully understood the magnitude of her team’s accomplishment Tuesday evening.
Until she saw the wild celebration that ensued from the Lady Rams’ players and parents after FHS had scored a five-game conquest over backyard rival Louisburg in an early-season Northern Carolina Conference showdown at the LHS Gymnasium.

HENDERSON -- The start to the season has not been a kind one for the Louisburg Warriors in boys soccer competition.
Louisburg, which is still looking for its first win of the campaign, was defeated 4-0 on the road Thursday against the Kerr-Vance Academy Spartans, who feature several Franklin County players on their roster.
