Dear Editor:
Although I don’t watch much television, I am familiar with Betty White. (mostly from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), I must say I am ‘very impressed’ with her recent ‘return to relevance’, as I’m sure it’s referred to in ‘TV-land’.  Ordinarily, I would be one of the last to give kudos to television celebrities, but I have to give a big one to Ms. White!

Music Summit and Hymn Sing held
First Baptist Church, 411 Spring St., Louisburg, held its first Music Summit and Hymn Sing, July 8-11. The event was coordinated by First Baptist Minister of Music Glendora Thomas Powell, and attracted approximately 100 participants throughout the four-day experience. The theme was “Honoring God through Music Ministry; Encouraging, Edifying and Empowering.”

Unemployment rate down in July
County unemployment rates will be released later this week, but the most recent state numbers show a decline in those out of work.
According to the state Employment Security Commission, North Carolina’s unemployment rate decreased to 9.8 percent in July.

VGCC recognizes students for summer employment
Vance-Granville Community College’s Workforce Investment Act (WIA) department held a luncheon and ceremony on Aug. 13 to recognize local college and high school students who gained valuable work experience this summer. The WIA Summer Youth Employment program placed students in a wide variety of jobs, at which they worked an average of 32 hours per week.

DOT offers new online forum
The state Department of Transportation is giving motorists another forum to address mobility.
The state DOT wants to know how residents think money generated by the state’s new Mobility Fund should be spent.
Motorists can use their computer or other Internet-enabled device to respond.
For the first time, the state DOT is using an online forum called Citizens Connect to reach out to citizens.

The Rev. Canon E. T. Malone Jr. will lecture on “The Episcopal Church in North Carolina during the War Between the States” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Kittrell.
This talk should appeal to anyone interested in the Civil War, church history, or local history. The public is invited. There is no charge for admission, but a $5 donation to the St. James’ Building Fund is suggested.
