Although I don’t watch much television, I am familiar with Betty White. (mostly from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), I must say I am ‘very impressed’ with her recent ‘return to relevance’, as I’m sure it’s referred to in ‘TV-land’. Ordinarily, I would be one of the last to give kudos to television celebrities, but I have to give a big one to Ms. White!
FRANKLINTON—Helen Snead Carter, 83, died Saturday, Aug, 21, 2010 at Franklin Regional Medical Center. A visitation combined with a memorial service will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday evening, Aug. 26, at the home of Mrs. Carter, 4094 Oak Circle, Franklinton.
LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Freddie Branch, 70, who died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. at Louisburg High School auditorium. Burial will follow in the Jones Chapel church cemetery.
LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Andrew Khyree “Boosie” Lark, 19, who died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at Greater New Life Ministry in Franklinton, with the Rev. Dexter T. Perry officiating. Burial will follow in the Mary Helen Jones cemetery.
WAKE FOREST - Doug Walston, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010 at Wake Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 25) in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leslie Hartsfield officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
MIDDLESEX - Vester Howard, 90, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2010. Funeral was Sunday, Aug. 22, at St. Mary Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ in Bailey. Burial was in Middlesex Memorial Gardens.
ZEBULON - Robert Doyle, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel in Knightdale, with the Rev. Mark Cottrell officiating.
WAKE FOREST —Norma Dillard Estes, 92, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010 at Guardian Care of Zebulon. Funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 23, at Bright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Tommy Seedorf officiating. Burial followed in Woodland Baptist Church cemetery.
GODWIN - Mrs. Iantha White Mitchell, 100, died at her home, Tuesday, August 17, 2010.
Funeral services were held Friday at 3:00 pm at Baptist Chapel Church with the Rev. Alan Roberts and Rev. Paul Honeycutt officiating. Burial followed in the Family Cemetery.
First Baptist Church, 411 Spring St., Louisburg, held its first Music Summit and Hymn Sing, July 8-11. The event was coordinated by First Baptist Minister of Music Glendora Thomas Powell, and attracted approximately 100 participants throughout the four-day experience. The theme was “Honoring God through Music Ministry; Encouraging, Edifying and Empowering.”
County unemployment rates will be released later this week, but the most recent state numbers show a decline in those out of work.
According to the state Employment Security Commission, North Carolina’s unemployment rate decreased to 9.8 percent in July.
Vance-Granville Community College’s Workforce Investment Act (WIA) department held a luncheon and ceremony on Aug. 13 to recognize local college and high school students who gained valuable work experience this summer. The WIA Summer Youth Employment program placed students in a wide variety of jobs, at which they worked an average of 32 hours per week.
The state Department of Transportation is giving motorists another forum to address mobility.
The state DOT wants to know how residents think money generated by the state’s new Mobility Fund should be spent.
Motorists can use their computer or other Internet-enabled device to respond.
For the first time, the state DOT is using an online forum called Citizens Connect to reach out to citizens.
Jody Nicole Shearin and Corell Johnnie Pittman were united in holy matrimony on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Wood Baptist Church. The 2 p.m. double-ring ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Phillip Kissinger.

The bride is the daughter of James Richardson of Roxboro and the late Teressa Richardson of Louisburg. She is the granddaughter of Anthony and Annette Alston of Louisburg and the late Fannie Mae Richardson of Rocky Mount.
Allison Jenie Harrington of Durham and the Rev. Therlin Kearney of Raleigh are planning to be married Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Hunter of Apex and groom-elect is the son of Joseph Kearney and Mozell Kearney of Franklinton.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Collie of Louisburg announce the engagement of their daughter, Teri to Junius Moore, son of Gregory Moore of Morehead City and Julia Moore of Greensboro. The wedding is planned for 11 a.m., Nov. 13, 2010, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Raleigh.
Diane H. Goyette of Wake Forest announces the engagement of her daughter, Jamie Leann Goyette of Riverside, Calif., to Christopher Nathan Sunde, also of Riverside, Calif. The groom-elect is the son of Linvell and Ginger Sunde of Charlotte. The wedding will take place on Sept. 4, 2010 at 4 p.m. on the beach at 57 West 1st Street, Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. A reception will follow at The Isles Restaurant.
Franklin Regional Medical Center will host an American Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The community is invited to donate blood on the American Red Cross bus, which will be located outside of the front entrance at Franklin Regional.
The Rev. Canon E. T. Malone Jr. will lecture on “The Episcopal Church in North Carolina during the War Between the States” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Kittrell.
This talk should appeal to anyone interested in the Civil War, church history, or local history. The public is invited. There is no charge for admission, but a $5 donation to the St. James’ Building Fund is suggested.

FRANKLINTON -- Southern Nash picked up right where it left off during last Friday’s season-opening football matchup at Franklinton.
Last year, the Firebirds made a historic run to the Class 3-AA State Playoff Semifinals before dropping an overtime heartbreaker to South Johnston.
BUNN -- First-year quarterback Andre Davis is expected to spearhead Bunn’s spread offense with his arm during the 2010 season.
But Davis used his sprinter’s legs to help the Wildcats get past C.B. Aycock by a 21-13 margin in the football opener for both teams Friday on the BHS campus.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Due to a nasty storm that moved through the area, Nash Central and Louisburg had to wait 45 minutes to begin their non-conference boys soccer matchup Monday afternoon on the NCHS campus.
The wait was even longer for someone to score -- and it never happened.
Louisburg encountered a tall task -- literally -- during its play at the Heritage High School Volleyball Tournament in Wake County.
Heritage, a new school located between Wake Forest and Rolesville, hosted a seven-team jamboree-type event last weekend to kick off the school’s spike program.
