County sheriff deputies investigate assault, theft and vandalism
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects who assaulted and robbed a Wake Forest man.
According to a report by Dep. Doug Murphy, Brandon Henderson, 27, of Elf Court, told authorities he was leaving 109 Deer Run off Sid Eaves Road when he was approached by two people at about 2:35 a.m. on Monday.
Henderson told investigators that the suspects grabbed him and threw him to the ground.

4-H shooting sports club competes
The  Franklin Sharp Shooters — the county’s first and only  4-H shooting sports club — was chartered this past April. The primary goal of 4-H shooting sports is youth development, with parental involvement. Eight of the clubs youngsters participated Oct. 10 in the  2009 N.C. 4-H Target Shooting Sports tournament, which took place at the Millstone 4-H camp located in Elerbe.

HENDERSON -- Franklinton closed out its pre-Christmas wrestling schedule with a matinee appearance Wednesday at the annual Raider Duals at Southern Vance High School.
The event was supposed to be held last Saturday, but was pushed back a few days because of the threat of inclement weather.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- With holiday tournaments now completed -- or about to be completed -- Franklin County’s high school winter sports teams will now focusing on resuming their respective seasons in early January.
Bunn’s wrestling squad will be the first to get back into action, as the Wildcats will participate in the annual Knightdale Duals Tournament on Jan. 1-2 in Wake County.

A few thoughts as we get ready to head into a New Year -- and a new decade:
• No matter what I usually say about him, this I believe about Carey Johnson:
The man has a heart of a champion, and a true, determined will to succeed.
In the early stages of our College Football Bowl Picks Contest, Johnson fell behind 2-0. In this year’s format, we had 16 different games, so Johnson needed a quick counter to get back into the race for the beloved stapler, ‘Old Ironsides’.

Commissioners hold public hearing on Palziv incentives
Franklin County commissioners held the first of two public hearings that could provide a potential Franklin County company with even more incentives to locate here.
On Nov. 16, the county’s governing board agreed to match a $250,000 One North Carolina Fund grant to lure Palziv’s North American headquarters into the HON building on N.C. 56 just outside of Louisburg.

Fred Hight Jr. was sworn in to a seat on the council some 32 years after he took his first oath of office for a seat on the council.

Getting schooled
Franklin County’s Early College High School doesn’t begin until Jan. 21, but its principal, Jim Harris, gave students, and parents, for that matter, their first challenge on Monday.
Harris challenged students to take advantage of the ground-breaking program and challenged parents to provide necessary support to see their children earn their diplomas and two years of college courses through the five-year program.

Hwy. 401 bids come in lower than expected
Franklin County indirectly got a little good news just before the Christmas holiday, although just how good the news actually will be remains to be determined.
When the state Department of Transportation opened bids for four-laning 3.695 miles of U.S. 401 from the Neuse River north to almost Rolesville, they got a pleasant surprise.

TDA committed to better website
During its most recent meeting, the county’s Tourism Development Authority committed itself to improving a website designed to lure visitors to Franklin County.
The committee’s website, www.visitfranklincountync.com, remains outdated and due to the contract under which it was created, authority members have limited ability to update it themselves.

United Way honors Debra Poleo for service, re-elects Dale Byrns chairman
When it comes to getting the numbers right, Debra Poleo has been someone to count on.
The Louisburg accountant was recognized last week during the December board meeting for four years of volunteer service to the United Way of Franklin County as a board member and treasurer, seeing the agency through several executive director changes and helping manage the organization through an historic economic time that has challenged all non-profit agencies.
