EDC looking for entrepreneurs
An idea floated at the Thursday meeting of the Franklin County Economic Development Commission not only has promise, it’s a challenge for those who say not enough is being done to create jobs in Franklin County.
The EDC chairman, Mark McArn, suggested that the board consider holding what he tentatively called an Entrepreneurial Fair to help local folks who think they have a great idea for a new business get started.

It was a combination “work” assignment and a trip with my better half and our 5-year-old to Bunn for the annual egg hunt sponsored by the Fire Department.
As usual, the Bunn Firemen (and their many supporters) know kids and candy. Or, maybe it’s candy and kids.

Suspension of student right choice
Dear Editor,
The article in the Saturday, April 03, 2010, Franklin Times relating to a student suspended for not complying with established rules is thought provoking.  The reasons for these rules are very clear: to protect students, faculty, and promote good order and discipline.  The student clearly understood the rules, was warned repeatedly of the consequences, and chose not to comply. Now he and his supporters want to be excused for it.

Modifications to be made to cemetery maintenance contract
Franklinton staff is working to modify its grass cutting contract so cuts coincide with holidays.
A number of residents complained to Town Hall after the Easter Holiday that the grounds at Fairview Cemetery had not been mowed.
Town Manager Larry Carver said Simple Cuts Lawn Care was contracted last year to cut town property, including the cemetery, on or about the 15th of each month.

A Franklin County man was charged with assaulting a female prior to leaving town with her vehicle.
Rowan County authorities arrested James Anthony Torrence a day later — on April 2 — citing him with moving violations in the swiped vehicle.

Open hours of the DeHart Botanical Gardens
Springtime days and hours for the DeHart Botanical Gardens have been extended every day from April 4 to May 15, and from sunrise to sunset.
Because of the early hot weather, many flowers are blooming early. The peak of azalea blooming may be between April 10 to April l8, but there are other azaleas that bloom in late April and through May. The Gardens have a variety of other flowers and colorful shrubs for something to see each month.

Family Science Day at Morehead Planetarium
The Morehead Planetarium and Science Center has worked with the Franklin County Libraries for the past two summers to bring the GlaxoSmithKline Summer Science Camp to our libraries. The Camp will be available to library patrons again this coming summer at the Bunn and Youngsville branches. Online registration will be available this year on May 1.

Great American Clean-up April 15
The Franklin County Solid Waste Department and Solid Waste Task Force will again sponsor the annual Great American Clean-up event on Thursday, April 15.
Volunteers from all over the county will be participating in this national event in the hopes of not only making Franklin County cleaner and more beautiful, but also stimulating interest among our citizens in keeping our highways clean and free of trash and debris. Pre-selected highways will be targeted by our dedicated “litter-getters” and should be clean and beautiful by day’s end.
