Tidmore trash not medical records
Franklin County sheriff’s investigators say former patients of a Louisburg doctor should rest comfortably.
Information that first appeared to be valuable medical records turned out to be nothing more than trash.
On April 9, a woman reported that she found what appeared to be medical waste and records in a dumpster on Jeffrey’s Way in Youngsville.

Having a spirited debate on smoking
I’d rather be called a ghoul than a lich.
What’s a lich? In fantasy literature, it’s typically the reanimated corpse of some dead king or sorcerer. Rather than just being an individual menace, the lich seeks to control the minds and actions of vast hordes of other beings.

It’s time police imposters get treated like criminals
It’s time police imposters get treated like criminals
Two recent reports of home invasions, one in Franklin County and one in Vance County, should send shivers down the backs of residents in both counties.
And, unfortunately, it could have a chilling effect on law enforcement officers.
In both instances, men who dressed in dark clothing or fatigues, tried to pass themselves off as law enforcement officers.

Bye, bye Dr. L’Homme
Bye, bye Dr. L’Homme
GOOD MORNING: Adios Dr. Bert! Actually, I think Franklin County School Board members were relieved to learn that Dr. L’Homme was leaving.
The fact is that Dr. L’Homme was not a good fit for Franklin County, but he should fit well in his new position in Washington, D.C.
We wish him well.

More bright, sunshiny days ahead—or not?
Could it partly be the weather?
Although 90-degree-plus days in April are rare for us here in North Carolina, most folks -- except allergy sufferers -- have been enjoying the magnificent weather that mirrors summertime but without the oppressive humidity.
Apparently, that’s lifting spirits as well -- and that may be having a long-hoped-for effect on the economy.

Belle and whistles
Of all the competitors in the International Whistlers Convention last week, Cassidy Osgood had the shortest trip to the Louisburg College Auditorium.

Local officials tracking Swine Flu
Local health officials said they have not been inundated with swine flu fears, but they are working to stay on top of the virus before it makes an impact here.
Across the country, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed 64 cases of the virus which, if untreated, could prove deadly.
None of the cases, though, have been confirmed in North Carolina.

SMART approach to cancer
SMART approach to cancer
“Technology is a necessary ingredient, but it’s not sufficient,” says cancer fighter Dr. Robert McLaurin -- and that may seem like an unusual statement coming from a man who has dedicated his life to beaming radioactivity into patients to kill malignant cells.
To paraphrase cyclist Lance Armstrong, he adds, “it’s not about the accelerator.”
Dr. McLaurin, owner of Franklin County Cancer Center and a radiation oncologist, explains that dealing with cancer is not merely about the size and power of the radiation-producing equipment, it’s also the careful, exacting control of the dose that can spell the difference between successful treatment and dangerous side effects.

Pair yet to fold
Investigators continue to look for two men accused of a home invasion last week that left two people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Investigators in Vance County are trying to determine whether the same suspects invaded a home in Henderson on Saturday.
According to Franklin authorities, two black men kicked in the front door of a house at 8625 N.C. 39 South near Pilot during the evening of April 22.

Local school budget request cut just slightly
“Given the current environment, this is not bad news,” explained Doug Moore, assistant superintendent for business and finance, as he gave the school board a quick glimpse of its local funding options from Franklin County.
Moore, while emphasizing that the county commissioners must make the final decision, said that the county’s proposed budget cuts only about 1 percent from current operating funds and about five percent from capital expense funds.
Those numbers, he said, are what county finance director Chuck Murray and county manager Angela Harris are planning to present to the commissioners as the staff’s recommendations for the 2009-10 fiscal year.

L’Homme resigns
L’Homme resigns
It’s official. The Franklin County School District is in the market for a new superintendent following the acceptance of Dr. Bert L’Homme’s resignation Monday night. It will be effective at the end of June.
In a letter of resignation presented to the school board, Dr. L’Homme said he has accepted the dual position of director of Education Policy and Coordinator for the Cradle to Prison Pipeline Crusade with the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington, D. C.
The Children’s Defense Fund is a child advocacy and research group, founded in 1973 by Marian Wright Edelman. Their motto Leave No Child Behind indicates their mission to lobby on behalf of children in the federal government and the states, with the support of private and corporate donations and no government funding.

Bunn could have moved into a tie for the top spot Tuesday, but it wasn’t to be as Southern Vance standout hurler Jordan Garrett whiffed 13 batters.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg’s final chance for a shot at the Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference regular season softball championship came Tuesday at home against Gates County.
But the Lady Warriors will now have to shift focus toward a possible runner-up finish after Coach Erica Wammock’s club was shut out by a 20-0 score against the league-leading Lady Red Barons.
Louisburg had lost by 13 runs earlier in the year at Gates, but Wammock had hoped for a closer outing this time around.
