Throughout his storied coaching career, Holloman has made a habit of taking his team to Salina, Kansas, for the National Junior College Athletic Association National Women’s Basketball Tournament.
But the tradition-rich Lady Hurricanes have been derailed in each of the past three seasons by Georgia Perimeter in the district championship game -- with a berth in the nationals at stake.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg High looked every bit the part of a No. 1 seed during Friday’s first-round matchup against Dixon in the Class 1-AA State Football Playoffs.
The top-seeded Warriors were dominant on offense and defense -- and even threw in some effective special teams plays -- to easily defeat the visitors by a 62-0 margin at Warrior Field.

SNOW HILL -- Just 24 minutes from elimination, the Bunn Wildcats responded with a strong second half Friday to overtake host Greene Central in the first round of the Class 2-A State Football Playoffs.
BHS trailed by 10 points at the break and had been held scoreless, but the Wildcats rattled off a trio of clutch touchdowns to defeat the Rams by a 21-10 margin.

Voter turnout is sparse
Voting in the 2007 municipal election got off to a pedestrian start on Tuesday as only two towns had contested races on the ballot.
Louisburg had a late entrant as a write-in candidate to make a four-way race for three town council seats, however, voting numbers were lagging Tuesday afternoon.

Gimme Shelter
Commissioners, Humane Society volunteers and county staff were on hand Tuesday to break ground on a shelter designed to give animals a new leash on life.
Last month, commissioners approved a $1.2 million contract to build a new animal shelter next to the county jail on T. Kemp Road.
The 7,300-square-foot building will replace the dilapidated shelter next to the landfill that the county currently uses.

Mother says son’s death was no accident
The mother of a pedestrian killed in August said it was a murder plot that led him to wander along U.S. 401 and into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
According to a report by Trooper T.L. Hunt, Ronald Tyrone Kearney, 34, was walking in the roadway of the two-lane highway at about 3 a.m. when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle — a sport utility vehicle driven by an EMS worker responding to a car fire call.

Commissioners to look at revenue options
Franklin County Commissioners agreed to speed up their agenda Monday night, bringing back for discussion two revenue options that they originally planned to deliberate on in January.
In July, the state legislature gave counties the chance to put before voters a land use transfer tax or a quarter-cent sales tax increase as revenue options to help offset raids the state made on other county funding it will use to pick up Medicaid expenses.

Louisburg College students, staff and officials are set to inaugurate its new president on Friday, the culmination of a week-long list of activities.
J. Michael Clyburn was named as the school’s president over the spring and summer replacing former president Reginald Ponder.
