More students making up the grade
An estimated 15 percent more students are in summer school this year than last, with Terrell Lane Middle having close to a third of its population in remediation. Tougher EOG math standards are affecting schools similarly throughout North Carolina. “The state kind of hit us between the eyes, changing both the difficulty of the questions and the way the test is graded at the same time,” David Hawks, principal of Bunn Middle, said.

Bunn Middle School Principal David Hawks has accepted a position with a Durham school that allows him to put his love for education and art in perfect harmony.
The Durham School Board voted on Thursday to appoint Hawks as the new principal of Durham School of the Arts.
The artistic magnet school allows Hawks, who served as a band director for nearly 20 years in Roanoke Rapids, the opportunity to quench his passion for education and artistic pursuits, he said.

Joint meeting to explore another school bond ­— $95.4M in need
A committee set up to apply development fees toward school capital needs will recommend that the county float two bonds totalling more than $95 million.
Earlier this year, the Franklin County Board of Education identified $90 million in new construction and improvements to address needs through 2014.
Expected inflation has pushed that price tag to more than $95.4 million.

The Franklin County Board of Health could form a health district with the Warren County Health Department. Warren County health officials sent a letter to the Franklin County BOH May 15 to approve a state-completed study for a union between the two health departments.

Many of you know the awesome feeling after such conferences; we certainly get all kinds of charges, spiritual energy, and commitments flowing as we listen to speeches and share ideas with members of the other churches.
On June 13-16, Methodist clergy and laity joined together to celebrate the 2007 North Carolina Annual Conference at the Greenville Convention Center.

MANU gets 2 on cocaine charges
The Multi-Agency Narcotics Unit made two more drug arrests Tuesday. Steve Eric Perry, 40, and James Antonio Chavis, 24, both of 265 Bridgewater Drive, Louisburg, were charged with possession with the intent to sell and deliver cocaine hydrochloride, or powder cocaine, as well as possession of cocaine and felony maintaining a dwelling for the sale of controlled substances.

Family seeking answers in hit-and-run
A grieving family is reaching out to Franklin County and the surrounding area in hopes that the person responsible for a hit-and-run death is brought to justice. R.C. Williamson of Granville County was working on a construction site on N.C. Highway 96 near the Way Side Farm Road intersection on June 13 when the collision occurred.
