PITTSBORO -- Bunn High School's season-long wrestling heroics didn't end with the Wildcats' historic appearance in the Class 2-A State Team Championships 12 days ago.
After that match, BHS head coach Parker Haake emphasized that the Wildcats had plenty to still work for this winter -- beginning with an appearance at last Saturday's Class 2-A Mideast Individual Regionals at the new Seaforth High School in Chatham County.

School masks stay! But maybe not for long

LOUISBURG -- Students in Franklin County Schools will have to continue wearing masks until at least the first of next month following a decision not to immediately change that rule.
The action came Monday night and after a group of citizens showed up waving small signs and telling the Board of Education it was time to end the mask mandate and allow students or their parents to decide whether or not to wear masks.

Arts Center approved in Franklinton

FRANKLINTON -- By split vote, town commissioners agreed to move forward with two partnerships designed to expand art and recreation offerings.
Developer Joe Farrell, a key contributor to Franklinton's downtown renaissance, has proposed turning the old First Citizens Bank building into an arts center.
The partnership with the town would allow it to lease the building and share revenues generated from galleries, art shows, performances, classes and other activities.

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County commissioners have called a special session to consider adopting a revised redistricting map designed to answer a legal challenge.
Youngsville resident Doug Berger filed a complaint in Franklin County Civil Superior Court, alleging that a redistricting map adopted by county commissioners in November is unfair to some voters in District 5.

Youngsville strives to regulate growth

YOUNGSVILLE -- Town commissioners approved two amendments to the development ordinance that should better help the town navigate growth.
First, the board approved an amendment that requires residential developers to either supply public recreational space or pay a fee in lieu to the town.
The second amendment requires developers to provide the town with a multimodal transportation impact analysis -- which already covers vehicle traffic impacts and planned improvements to roadways, but would also include plans to add bike and pedestrian paths.

County airport closing for extensive repairs

LOUISBURG -- Airport staff and officials are bracing themselves for a significant shutdown when their runway gets redone.
During the airport board's Feb. 8 meeting, Airport Director Bo Carson informed members that the runway is slated to be shut down for about 36 days, beginning in mid to late March, while construction crews rehab the nearly 30-year-old runway and expand the apron.

LHS student dies following crash with bus

LOUISBURG -- A 16-year-old girl involved in a head-on crash with a school bus has died, the State Highway Patrol confirmed.
The Franklin Times has not identified the girl because of her family's wishes.
The State Highway Patrol did not release her name because she is a juvenile.

The Franklin County Arts Council is planning an open house from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, to introduce Shameka Manson, the group's new executive director, and give visitors a chance to view her art. Manson is a mixed-media painter, educator, and author. She is a 2018 graduate of North Carolina A&T State University and recently co-authored a book with her former professor, Dr. Willie F. Hooker, entitled "The Evolution of African American Culture and the Fine Arts."

Bunn booking buzzard busters ... again!

BUNN -- Town commissioners have tasked its planning staff with crafting a more specific plan to deal with its vulture problems.
Going back to late 2020, residents, town staff and officials have worked to rid the town of buzzards, which had been causing damage to public and private property.
Partnering with the school system, propane canons were deployed atop Bunn High School to create loud noises at random times to disperse the birds from the rooftop there, as well as nearby areas.

The group includes Peter Bloom, flute; Francis Grimes, viola; and Steven Sussman, piano as they make their first visit to the antebellum home of the Cherry Hill Concert Series. The Ensemble Aubade's program will include wide-ranging music for the unusual combination of flute, viola and piano. Works will include compositions of Jean-Philippe Rameau, Louise Farrenc, Karl Henning, and Maurice Durufle'.

Cadet earns deans list honors at Virginia Tech

Jackson G. Bracknell, a junior majoring in PSCI in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences from Virginia Beach, VA, is among the Virginia Tech students named to the Dean's List for the Spring 2021 semester.
To qualify for the Dean's List, students must complete at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester.
