FACES OF THE SEASON. Creativity soared this year at the jack-o'-lantern contest that's part of the annual Frankenfest event in Franklinton. The creations were by area students and were part of the day-long celebration that ended with ghosts, goblins and assorted other creatures "haunting" the town -- and most towns -- across Franklin County.

The 4th Annual Lee Fowler Scholar-Athlete Awards presentation was held Tuesday, Feb. 9, following the Louisburg College women’s basketball victory over Brunswick Community College, 99-48. The Lee Fowler Scholar-Athlete Awards Program was established at Louisburg College in 2005, both in honor of Lee Fowler, the director of athletics at North Carolina State University, and to encourage student-athletes at Louisburg to be scholar-athletes. They are awarded to all varsity student-athletes who earn a semester average of 3.0 or higher.

607.401 head-on collision
Three people were air lifted to WakeMed following a head-on collision Monday on U.S. 401 at the Cedar Creek Bridge outside of Louisburg. Rescue workers from the county emergency services, Louisburg Fire Department and Gold Sand Fire Department worked steadily to free driver Mildred Lucas, 72, of Rocky Ford from the 1998 Chevy she was driving, above, having to cut through and drill into the vehicle. State Highway Patrol Trooper P.L. Clayton said Lucas was driving north on the two-lane highway when she crossed the center line at about 12:45 p.m. Lucas drove into the path of a 2002 Toyota Camry, driven by Richard Bowers, 56, of Gap Loop Road, Louisburg.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Melville Griffin, Jr. LaVerne loved his family and friends dearly and was a former pastor of Margarettsville Baptist Church in Margarettsville, NC, as well as a building contractor and the owner of The Cactus Barn in Centerville.

Investigators allege a Spring Hope woman who went to Ohio in hopes of starting a new life was abusing drugs before a man dumped her body in a rocky village. Scioto County sheriff’s deputies arrested Ohioan Richard E. Howard on Friday, charging him with the death of Nichole Alloway, 20, of Spring Hope. Alloway had gone to Portsmouth, Ohio, in May to meet a man she encountered on the Internet. Weeks after meeting, the relationship went sour.

My attention has been focused on Raleigh of late. The other day I decided to take a gander at what our Senior Senator Republican Richard "Bank Run" Burr was doing in Washington; the answer came back not his job.To Burr's credit, unlike his fellow Republican George Holding, who is supposedly representing many of us in the House, (and is running to represent us all), at least he hasn't been caught napping on national TV.

I've been among those complaining about Sen. Richard "Bank Run" Burr collecting his paycheck while refusing to do his job. That complaint was initially motivated by his refusing to consider President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court vacancy. Now he has taken it one step further by refusing to consider Obama's nominee for the vacancy on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The Franklin County Tourism Development Authority is welcoming news that the U.S. Congress passed legislation to create economic growth and thousands of new American jobs by welcoming millions more international travelers to the United States. KITTRELL — Investigators arrested one person connected to a weekend shooting that injured three people. Investigators took out warrants on Richard D. Franklin County Sheriff Pat Green spent this week boosting morale at the Sheriff’s Office after he fired a deputy for allegedly stealing weapons from a home. Green fired Richard Shearin, 43, on Tuesday shortly after a grand jury indicted him on three counts of felony larceny of a firearm.
