Attorneys seated a jury earlier this week, and prosecutors were expected to be in the crux of their case against a Louisburg man charged with killing a Bunn teenager in 2005. On Monday afternoon, prosecutors and defense attorney Boyd Sturges began selecting a jury that will determine the guilt or innocence of Antione Perry. The now 22-year-old is on trial for the first-degree murder of Marc Philippeaux.

Days of late winter rain have left much of Franklin County downright soggy -- and sent thousands of gallons of water cascading over and around the dam at the normally placid Perry's Mill Pond in the Pearce's area of the county. Although area creeks and rivers have been pushed beyond their normal boundaries and area farm fields have begun to look more like rice paddies, Franklin County and vicinity have been spared much of the weather-related devastation that has plagued much of the remainder of the nation.

LOUISBURG -- An eight-year wait proved to be well worth it for the Louisburg High School junior varsity boys basketball program. Last Friday at the North Edgecombe Gymnasium in Leggett, the top-seeded Junior Warriors wrapped up their first Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference Tournament crown since 2000 with a 65-52 decision over the Weldon Chargers.

BUNN -- It wasn't exactly Christmas in July, but town officials have begun looking at a gift, in a sense -- a new town hall.During the board's July 30 meeting, commissioners and staff updated the community about their efforts to secure funding, potentially, for a new town hall."They have always talked about a new town hall and trying to find money for it," Town Clerk Pamela Perry said of the board's discussion about replacing a building that dates back to 1930.

719.Hazelwood pleads guilty to accessory
The final man accused of taking part in the killing a Bunn teenager, Marc Philippeaux, was sentenced this week. Elliott Hazelwood, 28, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact of first-degree murder on Thursday. Superior Court Judge Paul Gessner sentenced Hazelwood to between 44 and 62 months in jail. Hazelwood received credit for serving a little over three years in jail already.

A handful of defendants in a home invasion murder were granted bonds this week. Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested Damien Lamont Crudup, 20, of Kittrell; Antavious Green, 18, and Jemel Davone Bullock, 24, both of Henderson; Taron Vershon Reed, 19; Damian Jaron Evans, 18; and Denalle Dontrell Anderson, 23, all of of Oxford; and Thomas Reed, 39,  shortly after finding Anthony Perry dead from a March 16 shooting.

726.Man killed in home invasion
A Franklin County man was killed Tuesday morning during a home invasion. According to Sheriff Pat Green, deputies were called out to 40 Baileys Creek Drive, a subdivision off Walter Grissom Road, to investigate a disturbance at about 12:30 a.m. There were signs of a break-in at the home, but investigators were unable to locate the homeowner, Anthony Perry, in the darkness.

732.Teen dies in 4-wheeler accident
Students and faculty were mourning the loss of a Terrell Lane student this week after he was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident. According to a report by Trooper T.L. Hunt, Kelsey Jamal Perry, 13, was riding an ATV on Neal Road near his home when he approached Laurel Mill Road. The teen failed to yield and his off-road vehicle rode into the path of a pickup truck traveling north on Laurel Mill Road. Emergency crews transported Perry to the hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.

739.Non-profit looks to rehab school property
Owners of the Gold Sand Elementary property want to turn the one-time school into a prisoner rehab and community center. Franklin County sold the rundown school and 14-acre property to the Perry’s School Alumni in 2006. The nonprofit entity bought the property for $1 with the provision that it be used for public purposes. The group envisions using the school and property for a rehabilitation community center, with one wing helping inmates transition from jail back into mainstream society.

741.ATV injuries prove fatal for Franklinton woman
A Franklinton woman died on Monday, days after she sustaining injuries in a late-night four-wheeler accident. According to a report by Dep. W.J. Wiggins, Elizabeth “Niki” Edwards was riding an all-terrain vehicle with a group of friends on a path at 42 Perry Way, a private road next to her 43 Perry Way home, when she ran into a cable strung across the path. The accident was reported at about 11:45 p.m. on March 4.

747.Last two home invasion suspects handed jail time
The final two suspects alleged to have played an active role in a home invasion murder were sentenced this week. One of the suspects, Damien Crudup, made a grander show of trying to stay out of jail, though. In the end, Superior Court Judge Carl Fox sentenced Crudup to between 64 and 86 months in jail and Damian Evans to between 59 and 80 months in jail for their roles in the March 16, 2010 death of Anthony Perry.

LOUISBURG--Dwight Nelson Faulkner, 72, of Louisburg departed this earthly life on Friday, August 10, 2018 at his home. Born on April 2, 1946 to the late Perry A. and Mamie Louise Denson Faulkner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Perry A. Faulkner, and his half-sister, Mildred Patton. Dwight was raised on a rural farm; he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He was very smart man, mechanically inclined so much so that he and his brothers built an air boat and a helicopter. Dwight was also an honest man and sometimes brutally honest, whether it was good or bad.

A former department of social services employee filed a lawsuit, accusing the department, Franklin County and others of wrongful termination. Attorneys for Lynda Collins filed a lawsuit on March 4, alleging that Franklin County, County Manager Angela Harris, DSS Director Nicki Perry and County Commission Chairwoman Penny McGhee were responsible for discriminatory and retaliatory acts that led to her termination in 2009.
