The N.C. Division of Forest Resources gave belated recognition to Bennett Perry on Friday for his family’s successful forest stewardship for more than 50 years on the 1,500-acre Perry farm along U.S. 401 south of Louisburg. The division presented Perry with a sign depicting the 50-year milestone, although the farm was actually certified 65 years ago on May 1, 1944. Due to an oversight, the Franklin County farm never received recognition for reaching this milestone 15 years ago. Considered to be the oldest tree farm in North Carolina, the land has been in the Perry family since 1752 when the seven lord proprietors of North Carolina granted 360 acres to Jeremiah Perry.
