SEVIERVILLE, TENN. -- Jose Castro was thrown out at the plate by left fielder Ty Wright to end the game as Tennessee edged Carolina 6-5 on Wednesday night at Smokies Park in a Class AA Southern League baseball event.
Carolina (0-2) entered the ninth trailing 6-3, but scored twice on a double by Castro to right-center against Alex Maestri to close to within 6-5.

Louisburg approves budget
With no flash, fanfare or even any public comment — no one showed up at its public hearing — the Louisburg town council quickly adopted its budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year Monday night.
The budget, requires no increase in property taxes, electric rates or sewer rates, although it reflects an increase of about $400,000 in total spending. The tax rate will remain at 53.5 cents.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer enrichment program’s mobile science lab stopped in Franklin County this week, giving elementary students a hands-on learning experience.

Franklin County commissioners opted against an action that could have made county government an even bigger brother.
Tax Administrator Jimmy Tanner recommended the county contract with auditors to review and audit existing business personal property accounts.
First, Tanner said state statutes require the audits.

Grant awarded to Epsom Fire and Rescue
RALEIGH - Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Wayne  Goodwin announced that the Epsom Fire and Rescue Association was awarded a $3,152.95 grant through the 2009 Volunteer Rescue/EMS Fund from the State of North Carolina.
The check will be mailed to Chief Matthew Grissom to be used by the department to purchase needed equipment, which must be approved by the Department of Insurance  Office of State Fire Marshal.
