High school students chosen to attend workshop in Raleigh
Two local high school students have been selected by the Franklin Soil & Water Conservation District to attend the Resource Conservation Workshop in Raleigh.  Sponsorship for the workshop is paid by the District and students are required to submit an application expressing their interest in natural resource conservation issues.

LOUISBURG -- During the Louisburg High School Athletic Awards Ceremony last month, LHS baseball coach Al Bolton referred to Chase Ragland as one of the best diamond standouts in the prosperous history of the school.
Bolton is an expert on such things -- he grew up around the LHS program before playing for the Warriors himself.

FHS’ Coe heading to WF-R
Franklinton High School Athletic Director/Soccer Coach Deran Coe has resigned his position to become the AD at Wake Forest-Rolesville.
 Coe, a native of Western Pennsylvania, was at FHS for nine years as both the boys and girls soccer coach. He is the only pitch mentor Franklinton has known, as he started the programs in 2002.

It’s just a game, so enjoy each day and be happy
Dear Editor,
Finally it’s summer; school is almost over, time for some ball games. We practice and look forward to a good time. We put on the uniforms and get ready. We play well and then the umpires start to make some really bad calls. The player at home was definitely out but was called safe. O.K., everyone makes mistakes. However, when bad call after bad call is made, the players get really discouraged and hang their heads in defeat.

A roughly minute-long video depicting Congressman Bob Etheridge assaulting a college student made the viral rounds on Monday.
While local Republican leaders don’t expect the video alone to turn the tide in this fall’s election, they do hope it leads voters to pay more attention to Etheridge’s history in Washington.

BUNN — Commissioners approved a 2010-11 spending plan without a tax increase, but out-of-town residents can expect a water rate increase.
The budget was not approved unanimously, though, as Commissioner Robert Hartsfield said he wanted to get more for the town’s money, particularly when it comes to public safety.

More then 500 students received their diplomas over the weekend, earning their tickets into the workforce or halls of higher education.
Bunn High School kicked off a trio of graduations Saturday at Louisburg College’s Seby Jones Center for the Performing Arts.
Principal Robin Faulkner told the 199 graduates to take the lessons of Bunn High School beyond the walls of the Bunn school and the college where they listened to her message.

Batton says law would give appointee four-year term
Some research by County Attorney Darnell Batton, plus Session Law 341, should equal a four-year term for the newly appointed School Board member.
Batton presented Board of Education attorney Boyd Sturges with a letter dated May 28, spelling out his interpretation of the law regarding the term for the school board appointment for District 3 in December.

Ingram warns of budget “funding cliff”
During an otherwise dull, routine meeting Monday night, the Franklin County Board of Education was warned that it is heading for a “funding cliff” in the 2011-12 fiscal year that has the potential to cause major problems in the local school system.
The warning came from School Superintendent Eddie Ingram following a meeting that he and board chairman Paige Sayles attended earlier Monday in Raleigh.

The Franklin County U.S. 401 Citizens Action Committee has scheduled two important meetings for the next two Thursday nights.
This Thursday, Richard Walls, aviation director of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, will speak about the local airport and its value to Franklin County and efforts to spark economic development in the county and the region.

Youngsville looks into yard sale ordinance
YOUNGSVILLE — Commissioners asked town staff to look into policy that would curtail home yard sales.
During the board’s meeting on Thursday, Commissioner Graham Stallings said he’s witnessed a residential yard sale in town that stretches the limits of non-commercial activity.
“... I’ve seen one the last five or six weeks in a row,” Stallings said. “It starts on Friday and goes through the weekend.

Chelsey Roberson of White Level was recently inducted into the Beta Alpha Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Wake Technical Community College, where she is studying nursing. To receive this honor, a GPA of 3.7 must be maintained.
Chelsey is the daughter of Kelly Roberson, sister of Carly Roberson,  and the granddaughter of Ned and Cathy Smith.

Louisburg High’s Jones wins UNCG iSchool Scholarship
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has announced that 179 high school seniors  from 44 counties have been named UNCG iSchool Scholars for their outstanding performance in online early college classes.
Among those honored was Dustin Jones of Louisburg High School. Jones received a special silver and gold honor cord to wear at graduation and a certificate of merit from the University.
