LOUISBURG - Bill Glover, 81, of Louisburg, NC passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of December 20th, 2019. He was born April 30th, 1938, in Nash County. In his last days Bill was surrounded by his family that he loved dearly! Bill was a retired electrician from the city of Rocky Mount. In his retirement he loved spending time with his family, woodworking and fishing.

1302.Local democrat to lead state party affairs
A Franklin County man who was at the center of the local President Obama campaign was recently tabbed to take his expertise across the state. Lake Royale resident C. Payne Lucas was hired as the state Democratic Party’s director of party affairs and development. His role will be to coordinate statewide field operations to help local, state and federal Democratic candidates get elected. “We brought him in because of his experience with the Obama campaign,” said Andrew Whalen, who was also recently tabbed as executive director of the state Democratic Party.

LOUISBURG--Margaret Wiggins Strickland died on July 13, 2020. She was fortunate to have her son, Robert, care for her for the last few months so she did not have to leave the home she loved. Margaret was born to Robert and Eva Wiggins on December 15, 1923 and lived her entire life in Franklin County. During her long life, she experienced the Great Depression, World War II and many other defining historic events. She also had the unique experience of being confronted in her yard by an elephant after the animal escaped from a circus in Louisburg.

PIKEVILLE -- Bunn built a 22-point lead to open the game, but couldn’t hold it during Friday’s regular season prep football opener at C.B. Aycock. Instead, the host Falcons rallied to earn a 39-38 victory over the Wildcats in an offensive slugfest. The Falcons amassed a whopping 433 total yards -- 381 of which came on the ground. Complaints and a motor vehicle accident led authorities to arrest nearly 10 people in a drug investigation.According to a report by Det. Justing Hastings, officers had received numerous complaints about teenagers buying and selling drugs in the Youngsville and Franklinton area.As a result of the investigation, detectives allege Phillip Cody Brown, Forrest Morosky, John Lambert, Steven Kinton and Kenneth Carl Woodcock were involved in illegal drug activity.

1344.Angela Harris hired as county manager
Following a closed session Monday night, commissioners hired Angela Harris as the county’s manager. Harris, a Franklin County native, was hired on an interim basis in December after Chris Coudriet left for an assistant manager’s post in New Hanover County. After being hired for the position Monday night, Harris didn’t have much time to celebrate, with meetings scheduled early on Tuesday and Wednesday.

SHALLOTTE - Lanier Cottingham Hasty, “L. C.,” 81, of Colonist Square, Ocean Isle Beach, died Saturday, March 21, 2009. He was born in Hasty, NC, a son of the late Dan and Nettie Lanier Hasty. He received a B.S. Degree in Agriculture from NC State University, and served with the Agricultural Extension Service in Franklin County, NC. He served as Sunday School Superintendant of Louisburg United Methodist Church and other leadership positions. He served on the Committee of 100 (Economic Development Board), the Franklin County School Board, and the Franklin Regional Medical Center Board as well as various other leadership roles in Franklin County. He was an Agency Manager for Farm Bureau Insurance for over 30 years, and a US Army Veteran. He was a real estate investor and an avid golfer.

1351.GOP Congress votes for lawsuit but against aid for 9/11 heroes
I wanted to present the juxtaposition of two recent events in Congress and how two of our local members of Congress voted. I find it revealing!For the first time, Congress overrode an Obama veto. (They normally simply obstruct anything from happening in the first place.) The override was on the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act. To be fair, most Democrats joined the Republicans in the override effort. The bottom line was that they feared a 30-second commercial painting them as taking the side of terrorists over the surviving families.

HENDERSON -- Vance-Granville Community College sophomore Tyrek Beverly of Oxford scored 23 points on Jan. 5 as the Vanguards men's basketball team faced the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie.He and his teammates fought hard, but the visiting squad eked out a narrow win, 74-71, at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson. BUNN -- In a duel of previously unbeaten teams, Bunn racked up 356 rushing yards and went on to defeat Elizabeth City Northeastern 30-17 in a non-conference prep football matchup Thursday on the BHS campus. A New York firm looking to recover a multi-million dollar loan from developers of a luxury community bought a chunk of the property at auction this week. D.B. Zwirn Real Estate Credit Partners LLC filed court papers this spring, seeking to recover nearly $9 million from Olde Liberty Club LLC, which operates Olde Liberty Golf and Country Club in Youngsville. Olde Liberty took out an $11.5 million loan in August of 2005 to develop the property, but D.B. Zwirn said the loan is in default.
