LOUISBURG -- Whether you wanted to see a horse race, a horse dance, rescue a youngster or carry around an archer, the county's annual Horse Farm Tour was the place to be.The 24th iteration of the annual Cooperative Extension event took equine enthusiasts from a farm just outside of Youngsville where tourists learned about how horses aid in search and rescue and how youngsters learn about horse archery; to a black-owned former tobacco farm in Wendell that now features horse racing, bull riding and concerts for a growing Hispanic community; to a Bunn-area farm that teaches some of the best dressage in the state.

BUNN -- The Bunn Wildcats continue to frustrate foes with their almost-dizzying array of offensive weapons. Bunn’s gamebreakers were out in full force last Friday as the Wildcats scored eight touchdowns on their way to a 48-21 victory over visiting North Johnston in BHS’ first Northern Carolina Conference game. The Wildcats, coached by Chris Miller, upped their mark to 4-2 overall.

1415.School Board approves Early College High School mascot, motto, colors
There will be a new flock of eagles soaring over Franklin County in coming months, clad in purple and gold. The school’s motto will be: “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow.” Those are the colors -- and the mascot -- of the new Early College High School that was initiated earlier this year and housed on the Franklin County campus of Vance Granville Community College.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Filing for the spring primary, which will either decide or shape races into the fall 2022 general election, starts on Dec. 6.The elections will test new district maps, lead to a new sheriff, as well as new Congressional representation for Franklin County and the region.In November, Franklin County commissioners approved redistricting maps that will guide elections for the next decade.

At least I showed up with a valid ID and was allowed to cast a ballot, even though the process left me feeling irritated at my own state.That's better than what happened to our own senior U.S. Sen. LOUISBURG -- The Louisburg Town Council breezed through a routine agenda Monday night, taking only two votes although one of those could have a far-reaching impact on the town and its electricity customers.The council voted unanimously to approve the pending transaction between Duke Energy Progress and ElectriCities.The contract, if approved by all 32 ElectriCities members, will allow the sale of electricity generating assets owned by ElectriCities to Duke Progress.

Actor, playwright and author Walter Williamson, a 1968 Louisburg College alumnus whose film credits include appearances in "Mr. Deeds" and "The Longest Yard," will serve as Artist-In-Residence on campus during the spring 2016 semester.Williamson will serve as a guest lecturer in classes, collaborate with students and faculty, and stage the world premiere of his new play at the college.Williamson's film, television and theatre credits are numerous.

1424.Committee of 100 lease deal for Goswick Prius crumbles under questioning
Franklin County will not move forward with a lease agreement to purchase a vehicle through the Committee of 100. At its Jan. 26 meeting, the Board of Commissioners agreed to enter into a lease agreement to get a 2009 Toyota Prius. The terms of the lease called for payments of $497.99 per month from Feb. 1, 2009, though Jan. 1, 2014.

August 10, 1925 - July 13, 2017

LOUISBURG - Iris Frazier Southerland, 91, of Louisburg, affectionately known to many as "Little Mama" or "Ms. Ike," went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on July 13, 2017. Ms. Ike epitomized a true southern lady who was full of grace and humility. She was a model wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. While she will always be remembered for her kind, gentle, nurturing heart and her outstanding Sunday lunches, her most outstanding attributes were her strong Christian faith and her dedication to her Lord. Ms. Ike was well known for her Biblical knowledge and not only was readily able to quote scripture, she lived her life daily by following God's word.

Franklin County voters placed their confidence in incumbents during Tuesday’s primary. Both Sheriff Pat Green and Sen. Doug Berger easily outdistanced challenges for their Democratic Party nomination. And although Louisburg’s Frank Deatrich lost his bid for the Republican Party’s nomination to take on Democratic Congressmen Bob Etheridge in the fall, he did win in Franklin County.

Thursday begins the first day of what could be called a housewarming for the Board of Elections. Franklin County commissioners rewarded County Manager Chris Coudriet with a merit raise this month — marking his fifth pay increase in three years. Commissioner Raymond Stone said Coudriet has been worth every cent of his pay increases which took him from $85,000 when he was hired in October of 2004 to $100,551 — the result of the most recent 5 percent merit increase earlier this month.

A Henderson businessman became the third man to go to prison on federal mortgage fraud charges. On Wednesday, Chief U.S. District Court Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced Donald Gupton to 75 months in prison on charges that conspired to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and making material false statements.

The county’s airport commission gave its staff approval to apply for a grant that could aid in airport expansion. 1442.A week of numbers — sales tax up, Etheridge’s poll numbers down
GOOD MORNING: Outdoor temperatures were down yesterday (Tuesday) morning, but sales taxes were up, along with the tax on cigarettes and beer as new tax increases adopted by the N.C. General Assembly went into effect. Sales taxes rose from 6.75 to 7.75 percent while the cigarette tax rose by 10 cents per pack. Beer jumped up by 5 cents per six-pack.

Three area businessmen have been convicted of corporate fraud. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Henderson businessman Donald W. Gupton, owner of Dynasty Homes of Henderson, Superior House Center and Creative Real Estate and Manufacturing Housing Sales Center, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, making material false statements and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

1448.HMA buys Youngsville property for $3.26M
Hospital Management Associates, the parent company of Franklin Regional Medical Center, has purchased 50.1 acres in Youngsville for about $3.26 million. The site at the corner of U.S. Highway 1 and N.C. Highway 96 is designated as the place where HMA wants to build a new hospital. The land has been under option for more than two years, but HMA’s plans for the relocation have run into repeated snags at the state level.

Michael Bennett, who at 11 has been described as a “young Mozart,” will be featured in a free Student Recital at Cherry Hill in the Warren County community of Inez at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4. Bennett entered the Curtis Institute of Music’s organ program at age 11 and won the National Music Teachers Association Composition Contest at age 11 as well.

1450.Shearon sparks NC Wesleyan to victory
LYNCHBURG, VA. -- Senior Justin Batts went 3-for-5 with an RBI last Friday afternoon to help lead his Battling Bishop baseball team to a 7-4 win on the road at Lynchburg College. Down 3-0 in the eighth inning, Batts’ lone RBI capped a seven-run Wesleyan rally that proved to be the difference in the game. Having won 12 of their last 14 contests, the Bishops are now 15-11 on the season, while Lynchburg stands at 14-8 overall.

1451.Program to remove abandoned mobile homes continues
In more than a year, a Franklin County program to remove unsightly manufactured homes has got the wrecking ball swinging. Now, the administrator of the program wants to see that ball continue rolling — downhill. In May of 2010, the county received a $40,000 grant to help with the removal of abandoned manufactured homes.

1453.Franklinton budget has pay increase
FRANKLINTON — Town staff presented commissioners with a 2009-10 budget that proposes no tax increase while including a pay increase for town employees. The budget, presented by Town Manager Larry Carver, keeps the tax rate at 68 cents per $100 of real property valuation and calls for no fee increases for water, sewer or trash collection. The 2 percent increase for all employees — save for Carver who works under contract — equates to $20,000.

1454.FEEDING THE FEEDERS!
Working quietly and mostly unseen since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Franklin County a small group of workers in the county schools' child nutrition department has been preparing breakfasts and lunches for children who, during more normal times, would get those two meals at school. Rather than risk those children going hungry during this troubled time, the school system has been providing and delivering meals five days a week to various sites around the county.

WARRENTON -- Bunn took to the air early and flew away to an impressive victory last Friday at Warren County. BHS sophomore quarterback Montrel Cooke threw for 235 yards -- his second-highest total of the season -- as the Wildcats rolled to a 34-8 decision over the Eagles in a Northern Carolina Conference contest. Cooke also delivered three touchdown passes to help Bunn improve to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Franklin County man on drug and fraud charges. According to a report, Dep. Damion Linder was dispatched to Oak Forest Lane after receiving a report that Paul Fogg, 46, was trespassing. According to the report, his ex-girlfriend told authorities that Fogg came by to retrieve belongings, but refused to leave when she asked.

GOOD MORNING: In what has become an annual event, some 20 or more members of the Louisburg High School Band, under the direction of Brian D. Miller and Mrs. Tracy Winstead, stopped off by our home out on Terrell Lane Friday before Christmas and serenaded us with Christmas Carols. As I have recalled previously, I had the privilege of playing in the original group that was then the Mills (now Louisburg) High School Band back in the early 1940’s, and I look forward to their annual visit with great anticipation.

1500.Hundreds of cyclists roll into town
A traveling band of brothers and sisters called Louisburg home Wednesday, one stop on a week-long trip from the mountains to the coast. Cycle North Carolina’s annual Mountains to the Coast bicycle tour brought about 1,000 cyclists to Louisburg, where they camped at Louisburg College or stayed at local hotels or bed and breakfast establishments.
