402.American Legion announces winner of oratorical contest
The American Legion Post 52 in Franklinton has announced that Victoria Sema was the winner of the Post 52 Oratorical Contest and the District 5 contest. Sema is a junior at Franklin County Early College High School.Her primary oration focused on the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. Sema went on to win the District 5 contest on Jan. 20, held in Roxboro.

403.‘Air Force Blue’ casts new hue of pride
on the campus of Louisburg High School

While orange and royal blue have long been official school colors at Louisburg High, there’s a new hue of blue on the Warrior campus this year: Air Force Blue. Following a lengthy application process and almost two years of preparation, Louisburg High was among a handful of schools selected for the 2005-2006 school year to launch an Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Program.

Last Thursday I was listening to the radio when I heard a news item I found unbelievable.The newscaster said that the North Carolina Board of Education had just announced it was allowing two online charter schools to open next fall and one of the charters was issued to K12, Inc.Perhaps The Onion had purchased WUNC. LOUISBURG -- Although the regular business agenda was very light Monday night, the Franklin County Board of Education heard a lot about heavier topics.Long-time Franklin County educator Robert Taylor presented the school board with a copy of his daughter Tensie's first book on how she was bullied from kindergarten through 12th grade. The book's title is "Bullied: From Terror to Triumph" (My Survival Story).Taylor said he hoped some of the information contained in the book would be useful for school employees and school principals" to help curtail bullying.

HENDERSON -- Vance-Granville Community College has named DeMarcus Oliver as the new head coach of the Vanguards men's basketball team. Oliver served as assistant coach, and later interim head coach, for VGCC during the 2015-2016 season. He will lead VGCC's program into its ninth season of play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X this fall.Oliver is a Granville County native and a 1999 graduate of J.F. Cedar Creek Middle School agricultural teacher Morgan Meadows received $1,500 from the Franklin County North Carolina Farm Bureau to use towards supplies in her classroom. Steve Nelms, president of the Franklin County Farm Bureau Board, presented Meadows with the check.This is just one way the Farm Bureau supports Franklin County Schools. The organization donates time in the classroom and funds for activities across the district which help promote agriculture.
