563.Schools seek $34.7 million; no hike in current expenses
LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Board of Education agreed Monday night to ask county commissioners for a total of $34,715,855 to operate the schools from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026.As usual, the budget request is broken into two categories: Current expense and Capital Expenditures.Last year, as the schools were lobbying for money to continue their longevity bonuses to retain staff, school officials made a deal that they would not increase their current expense request this year -- and the proposed budget unveiled Monday night reaches that goal.

565.Freshmen will spark FHS girls
Lady Rams will be young but talented FRANKLINTON -- Lester Wilder has seen just about everything during his coaching career at Franklinton High School, which has spanned four decades. Except a team this young. Wilder has never coached a girls basketball club as inexperienced as the one he will put on the court during the 2008-09. And it’s something Wilder doesn’t mind one bit.

TILLERY -- Louisburg High’s girls haven’t faced many obstacles during a strong 2007-08 basketball season, which has featured only one loss -- along with a slew of lopsided victories. But the Lady Warriors, despite a strong start, had to overcome plenty of adversity to garner a 57-43 road decision last Friday at Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference foe Southeast Halifax.

579.Lee’s Landscape
LOUISBURG - Coming into this season, the Louisburg Warriors have had only a pair of head football coaches over nearly the past two decades. So when Chris Lee accepted the LHS job back in the spring, there was destined to be an adjustment period for the program -- especially since Lee would be installing a new wing-T offfense to replace the Warriors’ long-time wishbone approach. But the process might not be as long as some would think, mainly because the rest of the Warriors’ coaching staff returns nearly intact from 2008.

If you're an avid watcher of all things political, you may have been fascinated by the process by which Franklin County's budget for 2017-18 was forged.Although it wasn't quite as messy as making sausage, it did provide a fairly good example of how the American political process is supposed to work.Sadly, the end product isn't exactly what the county needed -- and part of the budget should raise red flags about the future and future, built-in expenses.
