LOUISBURG - Mary Rivers May Pearce passed away quietly in Louisburg on December 26. There will be a memorial celebration 11 am on Thursday, December 29 at Louisburg United Methodist Church, 402 N. Main Street, Louisburg. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service and other times at the Cash home, 123 Munford Drive. The service will be conducted by Reverend Madison Hankal and Reverend Earl Dulaney.
Mary Rivers, the daughter of Robert and Mary James Harriss May, was born on July 27, 1919 in Greenville, NC. She graduated from Greenville High School and attended East Carolina Teachers College before graduating from Smithdeal-Massey College in Richmond. She married Warren Pearce (deceased) of Franklinton in 1941. She worked for the NC Fire Insurance Rating Bureau for nearly 30 years.
Since her infant baptism at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church in Greenville, she has been an active Methodist and engaged in all levels of service to her church, including selection as a North Carolina Annual Conference delegate. She received a United Methodist Women’s Special Recognition Pin for her service. In 2006, Mary Rivers was recognized by her church for her life-long service and was made an Honorary Life Member of the Administrative Council. Also, she was a member of the Major Benjamin May Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Farmville (the Chapter was named honoring her great, great, great grandfather.) She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Grand Matron.
She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a marvelous seamstress and cook. Many of her happiest hours were spent making clothes for her daughters and for her granddaughter’s dolls. She loved all church functions and worked tirelessly to serve children in the community.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol Pearce Howard and husband BJ of Buies Creek and Ann Pearce Lanier and husband Jim of Greenville; grandchildren Bryan Cash and wife Sarah, of Louisburg, Kristen Lanier Evans and husband Lynn of Greenville, and Suzanne Cash LeDoyen and husband Jason of Cary; five great-grandchildren – Watson , Lanier and Harriss Evans of Greenville, and Libby and Jenna Cash of Louisburg; niece, Nancy Best of Bahama; and two step granddaughters and their families.
In lieu of flowers, Mary Rivers’ wishes that gifts be made to the Louisburg United Methodist Church, 402 N. Main Street, Louisburg, NC 27549.
