Safe Space Executive Director Monica Kearney said the organization has lost a $154,000 federal grant, at least for this year, and is "scrambling" to replace those funds -- which cover a counseling program for children of domestic violence in an effort to break the cycle.

Just because they can doesn't mean you should!

Things may have changed dramatically by the time you're reading this -- thanks to an unwelcome "guest" named Ian -- but when this was being written, we'd just enjoyed a great early fall weekend.
The temperatures have moderated but not enough to cause many shivers, although the mercury dipped low enough early Saturday to cause some of us to reach for a flannel shirt!

Remember the real heroes in Mississippi fraud expose
Remember the real heroes in Mississippi fraud expose

Former Green Bay Packer Brett Favre has become the name and face of at least a $70 million welfare fraud in Mississippi, one of this nation's poorest states.
Certainly, it is despicable that a man who has a suspected net worth of at least $100 million would use money intended for welfare recipients to build a volleyball facility at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where his daughter played the sport.

TOUGH-LUCK SETBACK

LOUISBURG -- Given the penchant for five-set thrillers this season in the Big East Conference volleyball scene, it was no surprise that last Thursday's duel between Northern Nash and homestanding Louisburg went the distance.
