Evans family keeping sweet tradition alive after 200 years

LOUISBURG -- Even with something as slow as molasses, things can come at you pretty quick.
"I had been doing it with my dad for about 15 to 20 years when, one day, he said, 'I'm finished. It's yours. Get to it," Lewis Evans recalled of the day his father, Everette, put him in charge of the family's more than 200-year-old tradition -- making molasses.

Our sense of community is steadily being lost
Our sense of community is steadily being lost

It's no secret that newspapers, even community newspapers like this one, have been struggling for years, often against forces they cannot influence, let alone control.
First, of course, is the Internet's huge effect on retail shopping, the ways we communicate and the sense of almost complete isolation that it has fostered, especially during the pandemic.

A get-rich-quick scheme that's just barely out of reach
A get-rich-quick scheme that's just barely out of reach

In what feels like forever ago, I remember a former colleague and I had devised a plan to pretty much get out of working at the newspaper during the holidays -- or, all together, for that matter.
As the years pass, my memory of the specifics get a bit foggy, but I'm pretty sure our delusions of financial grandeur began with a feature story.
I seem to recall someone doing a feature story about a guy who was selling Christmas trees. And, said person was doing quite a bit of business, too.

Wanted: Fiscal responsibility

Dear editor: My eyes grew wide and my breathing shallowed faint as my chest tightened when I saw that a trash dump landsite was purchased for $800,000.
$170,000 an acre? This just blew my mind and I wondered on what planet this could occur. Perhaps Pluto? Never mind as that is not a planet anymore, or is it in this strange world?

SURPRISE PARTY
SCORING ACE FOR THE WILDCATS. Angel Medina-Keith has been exceptional up front this season for the talented Bunn High School boys soccer squad.
SURPRISE PARTY

BUNN -- Of the many developments during the 2022 Big East Conference boys soccer season, few are as intriguing as what the Bunn Wildcats have accomplished to date.
Bunn didn't even have a coach until August and got a late start to practice. Then, after not playing any non-league matches, the Wildcats opened in mid-September with its first Big East event at Rocky Mount.

ROCKY MOUNT -- With a second-place Big East Conference showdown against Bunn looming two days later, the Franklinton Red Rams first had to get past upset-minded Nash central on Monday in another key league boys soccer matchup.
Franklinton was able to handily avert the potential threat as the Red Rams utilized their possession game to control the proceedings from the outset en route to defeated the host Bulldogs by a 7-1 margin at the NCHS Soccer Complex in Rocky Mount.

Rams Run Away For Win
Rams Run Away For Win

FRANKLINTON -- Given their recent dominance of the series, it was no surprise that the Franklinton Red Rams continued their recent success against Louisburg with a Big East Conference football conquest last Friday.
But what was a bit eyebrow-raising was the margin of victory as Franklinton broke open a tight game in the second half en route to earning a convincing 56-7 decision over the Warriors at the FHS Football Field.

Ladycats hang tough against Nash Central

BUNN -- No victory is a given this season in the parity-filled Big East Conference volleyball scene, where even the lowest teams in the league standings are capable of knocking off a spike heavyweight on a particular night.
Such was the case last Thursday as Nash Central, currently the No. 2 team in the Big East, traveled to Franklin County to tangle with the Bunn Ladycats, who entered the contest with just a single conference conquest.

Exercise of the Month: Resistance Bands
Exercise of the Month: Resistance Bands

As the leaves begin to fall and the daylight shortens, exercise routines can tend to take a back seat to the fall atmosphere. Silly sandwiches for fall picnics
Silly sandwiches for fall picnics

Fall is a great time for bike riding and impromptu picnics with your kids. Sandwiches are easy to make. Most kids are happy to eat the sandwich they made themselves. Fresh vegetables from the garden or farmer's market were used to create this "open face" sandwich (pun intended). Save money with sandwich lunches by skipping the chips, fries, and soda that go with most fast-food lunches. Make your own sandwiches with low-cost ingredients.
