Town celebrates Arbor Day
FRANKLINTON — The town’s Tree Committee hosted its annual Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, planting a tree in honor of a woman whose roots were as as strong and deep as the mightiest oak.
The Tree Committee planted two trident maples, one in honor of Sadie Cutchins — a long-time businesswoman who ran Cutchins Funeral Home from the time her husband passed in 1976 through 1992, relinquishing the reins to her son, Town Commissioner Joe Cutchins.

Franklin-Granville-Vance Smart Start made a visit to the North Carolina Legislature on Tuesday, March 15.  The Tuesday for Tots event is a chance for local citizens to advocate in person with their legislators on subjects that are important to families and their young children.  ABC Adventures, a Louisburg child care program, attended and had the opportunity to meet with their new House member, Rep. Glen Bradley.

The Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity, Inc., Head Start is accepting children for the 2011-2012 Program Year. Children must be 3 years of age as of Aug. 31, 2011. Parents of children with mental, physical or emotional impairments are encouraged to apply. The program will make special provisions to serve children with special needs.

After covering the Franklin County government beat for the past six years, at least, I am convinced that the current board of commissioners have gone into more closed sessions than any board in recent memory.

Audrey Williamson presided at the event, and the Women’s Day Choir, under the direction of Edith Anderson, presented music.

As the St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church (Inez) continues celebrating African American history, Marque Debnam, a native of Franklin County, was the recipient of the “Spotlight on People” award at the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, March 20. He was presented the award for utilizing his gifts and talents in order to create lasting contributions to the African American community. The certificate was presented by his grandfather, the Rev. Junious M. Debnam, pastor of St. Stephen.

A new book was released March 8 by Tate Publishing, coauthored by Dr. Sylvia Crudup and Dr. James Bethea to help young people succeed even when they do not have adequate support systems from home, school, or community groups.
Dr. Crudup is an online career development instructor, consultant, and retired high school counselor in Franklinton, and Dr. Bethea is an associate professor and coordinator of the Mental Health Counseling Program at St. John’s University, Queens, New York.

401 meeting scheduled
The U.S. 401 Citizens Action Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at the Louisburg Training Center on Johnson Street.
The committee was created by the Franklin County Economic Development Commission to further improvements of U.S. 401 between Raleigh and Louisburg.
