On a whim, Franklin County resident John Poplaski decided to make a canoe.
“It was just a crazy notion,” he said.
He checked out a library book and after four months of woodwork, varnishing and sweat, Poplaski had completed a one-man canoe made out of walnut, pine and cedar.

Child dies in car crash
The daughter of a former Franklin County assistant district attorney was killed in a car crash Friday morning.
According to reports, two-year-old Kamryn Gardner was riding in a car with her father on Brassfield Road near Lawrence Road when the vehicle hit a deer.
The car went off the road, according to reports, and overturned in a swampy area.

A House office that has been represented by two people so far this year will have a new name on the office door in December.
Newcomer Glen Bradley beat out incumbent John May for the seat, posting an unofficial tally of 11,222 votes to 10,463 for May.

Two local races, one for the Senate and another for the Board of Commissioners, remained unchanged.
While there were plenty of shakeups across the state and federally, Sen. Doug Berger and District 6 Commissioner Harry Foy retained their seats.
Both beat out challenges by Michael Schriver and Rosemary Champion, respectively.

Death by motor vehicle case delayed
The case against a man charged with killing a motorist was continued until next month.
The state Highway Patrol arrested Ronald Bruce Hicks in August 2009 after alleging he was impaired when he crashed into a car on U.S. 64, killing Jessica Lynn Dixon.
Dixon’s husband was also injured in the wreck, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Veterans Day program at LHS
The military is all about adapting and last year, inclement weather forced the county’s Veterans Day program inside.
This year, organizers didn’t need a threat to realize it was a good move.
The Thursday program will again take place in Louisburg High School’s auditorium, featuring Brigadier General Karlynn Peltz O’Shaughnessy.

Union Bank expanding to Roxboro
Union Bank and Trust officers and directors broke ground for a full-service bank office this week in Roxboro.
The office will be at 1750 Durham Road as part of a 3.18-acre site that can accommodate parking and easy access from either direction. The 3,250-square-foot building will include one-on-one banking offices and two drive-thru lanes. An ATM will utilize a third lane.

Scout’s deed helps veterans
Jaylon Thomas, a Bear Cub in Pack 510 of Louisburg, was awarded a certificate of appreciation for collecting 6,000 pull tabs from cans to help veterans. He was also given a very special flag that was waved in his honor at Arlington National Cemetery. Pack 510 has donated a variety of items for the soldiers and constantly strives to make sure the soldiers are remembered for their services to America.

VGCC-Franklin County Campus open house scheduled for Nov. 10
Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus will hold an open house, called the “Pre-Registration Premiere,” on Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 6 p.m. The campus is located on N.C. 56 about one mile west of Louisburg. The “premiere” takes place shortly before the beginning of registration for the upcoming spring 2011 semester. Registration starts Nov. 15 for currently enrolled students, and Nov. 17 for new students.

Just as a coach benches an ineffective quarterback midway through a game, voters in North Carolina sent many Democrats to the bench in Tuesday’s midterm elections. For over a year, polls have shown that people are worried about the lethargic economy, think government is broken and are angry at leaders who are not fixing the problems. They yanked the starting lineup of Democrats Tuesday.

Citizens from Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties came together at the main campus of Vance-Granville Community College on Oct. 26 as the college’s advisory committees held their annual meetings.
Students in VGCC’s Culinary Technology program prepared hors d’oeuvres and desserts for a reception in the Civic Center preceding the meetings.
