1404.Small firms dotted Franklin County
The economy of Franklin County on the eve of the Civil War was based largely on agriculture, but census takers in 1860 recorded interesting information about a variety of small manufacturing enterprises. The census reflected operations during the year ending June 1, 1860.The Tar River and some of the county's numerous streams provided power for at least seven mills.Most of these, such as the ones owned by John D. Hawkins, Joshua Perry, and Thomas Davis, ground corn and wheat into corn meal and flour.

1405.Recent Franklinton grad dies in one-vehicle crash
LOUISBURG -- State agents are investigating allegations that a group of teens were hanging out drinking alcohol before one teen was killed in a wreck and another was seriously injured.According to the State Highway Patrol, Perry Jackson Frazier, 18, was driving south on Hodges Road at a high rate of speed when he came out of a curve and lost control of the pickup truck he was driving during the early morning hours of Oct. 10.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested three suspects accused of a breaking and entering that was thwarted by an armed resident. Thomas Wilkins told authorities he was asleep inside his home in the 100 block of Bridle Trail near Youngsville when he heard footsteps in the house the morning of Dec. 5.

LOUISBURG--Wilson Perry Clay, 91, of Louisburg passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at his home. He was born on May 23, 1926 to the late William T. and Lillian Swanson Clay. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy "Dot" Wrenn Clay; brothers, Lonnie, Bill; his sister, Carolyn; and daughter in-law, Debbie Clay. After serving our country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he then worked for Wrenn Motor Company and Griffin Motor Company as the service manager until his retirement.

CREEDMOOR -- During a season-opening loss to Bunn, the South Granville Vikings led in the fourth quarter, only to be done in by a kickoff return for a touchdown. SG literally returned the favor Friday, with the Louisburg Warriors as the victims. Down by three points with 7:15 to play in the game, the Vikings got a clutch 45-yard punt return from Tony Cole and went on to defeat Louisburg 26-20 in non-conference action at the SGHS Football Field.

1437.Bridge replacement at West River Road begins - Completion expected by April 15
Work to build a bridge across a waterway has helped mend some feelings in the community, too. West River Road buckled in June 2006 after waters from Tropical Storm Ernesto overwhelmed a box culvert that funneled Buffaloe Creek waters beneath the road. State Department of Transportation engineers and state legislators said placing a bridge over the waterway could take a year while residents in that community clamored for a more immediate fix.

1451.Bunn runners shine at Class 2-A XC Meet
CLEMMONS -- Bunn High School capped off its historic season by competing in the Class 2-A Boys State Cross Country Meet last Saturday at Tanglewood Park, which is located just west of Winston-Salem. The Wildcats finished 16th overall as a team with 357 points. Bunn’s top runner was junior Brannon Perry, who delivered a time of 19:15.71 over the 3.1-mile course. That was good enough for 82nd place.

LOUISBURG -- The Terrell Lane Middle School volleyball team capped off its undefeated regular season with a MAC-10 Conference Tournament crown. Police are looking for suspects who stole more than $24,000 worth of equipment from Embarq. According to a report by Dep. M.F. Gray II, he responded to the Youngsville company’s Park Avenue address just before 8 a.m. on July 14 after staff reported a break-in that happened the night before. According to Gray’s report, someone cut the fence in the rear of the property. According to Embarq employee Larry Liles, six generators were stolen, along with some hand tools.

Lola Belle Parrish was born on August 1,1932 on a small farm near the town of Louisburg in eastern North Carolina. Her parents were Archibald and Mary Alice Hubbard Parrish, who had seven children. Lola's brother, Archie Perry Parrish and her sisters, Virginia Ruffin P. Zuercher and Ida Stuart P. Perdue predeceased her. Surviving are sisters, Alice Faye Hunter of Louisburg and Nancy Jean Long of Sacramento, California and brother, Allan Parrish of Louisburg.

FRANKLINTON - Lt. Colonel Devero Martin, U.S. Army-retired, died Sunday, June 23, 2013 in his Franklinton home at the age of 84. Lt. Col. Martin was born and raised in a small community in western NC known as the Ogreeta section of Cherokee County, about 14 miles from Murphy, NC. The oldest of seven children, he was born to the late Fred and Elsie Graves Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dollie Smart, and his brother, Clyde Martin.
