117.TALE OF TWO TEAMS
LOUISBURG - When Dale Byrns views the Louisburg Lady Warriors, he sees a tennis program in a shape he would like to mold his Franklinton squad into one day.Despite losing several key players to graduation, Louisburg has continued to excel this fall under veteran coach Johnathan Waugh. That's because Waugh has been able to establish a complete program at LHS, with younger performers waiting to take over when established standouts move on.That recipe has been successful for Louisburg -- and it's one Byrns hopes to replicate at Franklinton, where he is in his first campaign as the Lady Rams' head coach.

167.Repeat title for Jaguars
BUNN -- So much for the theory that Cedar Creek Middle School's girls basketball program would embark on a downswing after last year's graduation of an amazing class that featured several current standouts on the Franklinton High School varsity -- including scoring whiz Miracle Cornell.

171.American pride, an interview with a soldier
During the week of Thanksgiving I traveled with my family to Fort Benning in Georgia.  We went there to see my cousin, PFC Matthew “Matt” Medlin, graduate from basic training. He graduated from the 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment.  He was a member of the 3rd Platoon. The graduation brochure we received shows the 47th Infantry Regiment was organized in the beginning on June 1, 1917 in Syracuse, New York.   It also shows that in the U.S. Army it is one of the most decorated units as it has received many commendations and citations throughout its history.  This includes eight Presidential Unit Citations.

174.In Their Own Words: Seniors reflect on end to spring season
Junior Vargas

Coming out of the first semester and into the second, the future looked bright. The cold days were coming to an end, spring was on the horizon, prom, graduation, and my final season of track was starting. With school being cancelled and my senior year being ended early, I feel a lot of emotions. I mean, truth be told, I liked going to school, but I'm also a teenager -- there's been days where I have been like "ughh why can't today be cancelled or something?''

176.One in four students slipping thru the cracks
We’ve all been hearing for several years that we are part of something called a global economy -- and, to be sure, definitions of exactly what that global economy is can differ greatly. But, when all the “chaff” is removed, the bottom line of most definitions is that education will be the key to a better future for all of us -- and the younger the person, the more critical education is said to be. Yet, it’s amazing to us that such a message is still not getting through to our young people -- those who would benefit most from a solid education -- and to their parents and other family members who often hold one of the keys to a child’s success in school.

FRANKLINTON -- The next generation of Franklinton High School volleyball has arrived -- but not quite in the way veteran coach Tom Harris envisioned it.Certainly, Harris knew some reloading was in order after last year's star-studded graduation class exited the program after leading FHS to a sweep of the Big East Conference regular season and tournament championships.

181.Here's hoping the start of summer doesn't lead to months of a bummer
It's not amazing to me that, as I get older, the prescription strength on my spectacles gets stronger as my vision gets poorer. What has been eye-opening, though, is that as my vision fades, I see things much more clearer than I did before the need for glasses. While my absolute favorite time of year is spring/summer and when this edition hits the streets, there will be 22 days until Summer 2025 officially kicks off. But, let's be honest, for most folks, summer begins with the Memorial Day holiday.

182.Dropouts get FCS’ attention
With high school graduation just around the corner, not all students will walk across the stage. Those who drop out of school do so for a variety of reasons, but “very seldom, practically never, do they do it because they do not have the academic ability to complete high school,” said Cherry Ayscue, the 11th- and 12th-grade guidance counselor at Louisburg High School.

183.2025 provides memorable grad speeches
It is not with pride that I type this next sentence, but it's truth: After about 20 years of covering high school graduations, it's fair to say that I often shift my mind to autopilot when it's time for salutatorian or valedictorian speeches.Like I said, don't come for me. It's my truth.Without a whole lot of fail, it was generally a given that there would be a Dr. Seuss quote.

Southern Nash, with one of its youngest-ever squads, went 0-19 overall and failed to win a match in the always-competitive Big East Conference.
