3007.W. R. Mills class of ‘57 reunion
The W. R. Mills Class of 1957 met Saturday, May 23, at Maple Springs Baptist Church for their 52nd class reunion. The fellowship hall was decorated in the school colors of blue and gold. Twelve classmates, 12 spouses, Marjorie Leonard (teacher), and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stallings (principal) attended the reunion. Jimmy Cottrell and Ralph Davis co-chaired the event. The reunion started at 3 p.m. to enable the classmates to socialize and catch up on old times. Linda Cottrell had a display area of old pictures and memorabilia.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Louisburg High School was the lone Franklin County club to get in a post-Tuesday basketball set last week as the Warriors entertained Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference rival Weldon at the LHS Gymnasium.Louisburg's boys fell to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the TRAC with a 60-54 loss to the Mighty Chargers.The difference in the game was a third period that saw Weldon outscore LHS by a 17-6 margin.

A nearly four-hour public hearing concluded with opponents punching holes in a joint petition to relocate Franklin Regional Medical Center. In November, FRMC and Rex Healthcare filed a joint petition with the state Division of Facility Services to relocate the hospital from Louisburg to just outside Youngsville, and Wednesday was the first and only opportunity for residents to voice their support, opposition or questions.

3013.Man with local ties faces kidnap, assault charges
A grand jury returned true bills of indictment against a man investigators allege kidnapped and sexually assaulted his ex-girlfriend before leading deputies on a four-day manhunt. Franklin County authorities charged Ryan McBain Brown, 35, with first-degree rape, felony assault inflicting serious injury, felony possession of a firearm by a felon, felony possession of a stolen firearm, and misdemeanors of assault on a female and false imprisonment.

HENDERSON -- A group of 18 students from Vance-Granville Community College, including a Franklinton resident, recently received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the North Carolina Community College System. The scholarship program, designed to help North Carolinians attend the state's community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation.

LHS head coach James Collier knows all about Wrights talents -- she torched the Lady Warriors for 43 points earlier in the season in a game that was won by the host Lady Trojans.

LOUISBURG -- Two more changes are coming to downtown Louisburg, one designed to decrease traffic and the other which may help bring more people to activities in downtown.The town and the North Carolina Department of Transportation have agreed that all truck traffic that is merely going through downtown be banned. The signs banning large trucks with three or more axles have already gone up.

3030.Hundreds of cyclists roll into town
A traveling band of brothers and sisters called Louisburg home Wednesday, one stop on a week-long trip from the mountains to the coast. Cycle North Carolina’s annual Mountains to the Coast bicycle tour brought about 1,000 cyclists to Louisburg, where they camped at Louisburg College or stayed at local hotels or bed and breakfast establishments.

A man’s criminal history and actions prior to his death may have kept a former town of Louisburg employee from spending the rest of his life in jail. Derrick Crudup, 30, was charged with first-degree murder following the Sept. 26, 2008 shooting death of Darrell Collins, 26. A jury found Crudup guilty of second-degree murder after about two hours of deliberation on Wednesday. Their decision came after Boyd Sturges argued that his client acted in self-defense and presented evidence that cast Collins as a drug-dealer.
