3202.High speed, two-county chase ends with struggle
YOUNGSVILLE -- A Wake Forest man is slated to appear in court later this month to face the first of several charges related to a high-speed chase through two counties that ended with a hand-to-hand battle over control of a Toyota Prius he used to play chicken with tractor trailers and a police cruiser.Youngsville police charged 54-year-old Kevin Richard Morgan with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, reckless driving and wanton disregard and misdemeanor injury to personal property.

You missed a great time and a chance to learn a little about the region’s heritage and what residents are doing -- or should be doing -- to preserve it for future generations. Of course, there also was food, heritage plants for sale, a great place to take a nature walk and a chance to catch up with friends that you may not see every day.

3204.Sheriff’s deputies investigate stabbing
Deputies arrested a Louisburg area man accused of aggravated assault and threatening to kill his girlfriend. According to a report by Dep. T.A. Flowers, he responded to a domestic disturbance on Deerhaven Court near Louisburg the morning of June 21. A 24-year-old woman told officers that her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Newell, called and threatened her life.

3207.Louisburg juggling variety of projects
LOUISBURG -- Money for a variety of projects was the focus during much of the Monday night meeting of the Louisburg town council this week.After an explanation of the project and a public hearing during which no one spoke, the council agreed to seek a $300,000 grant for the long-promised Bullock Drive water project.The town wants to replace the current two-inch water line with a six-inch line for about 1,500 feet, according to the town's consulting engineer Mike Aquesta.

3208.Louisburg will fight store’s ABC permit to control crime
The Louisburg Town Council resolved to fight a business’ attempt to get an ABC license saying such a permit would continue a trend of lawlessness and lewdness exhibited by drunken patrons. During a meeting on Monday night, interim Administrator Ed Wyatt and town Zoning Administrator Tony King advised the board that the proprietor of the convenience store at the corner of South Main Street and Bunn Road was applying for a beverage permit from the Alcohol Beverage Control Commission.

3209.Pastuer murder trial under way
The case against a man accused of killing his estranged wife continues this week. Prosecutors began presenting their case Monday, alleging that Robert Lee Pastuer, 49, killed Narskelsky Pastuer about a month before her body was discovered in the trunk of her car on Dec. 6, 2006. By Tuesday morning, the prosecution team of assistant district attorneys Annette Sellars, Bill Williamson and Kristin Peebles had solicited the testimony of Narskelsky Pastuer’s daughter, Melissa Battle, co-workers, a neighbor and a security officer with the State Employees Credit Union.

3210.Turpentine industry played role in pre-Civil War era
The production of naval stores -- tar, pitch, and turpentine -- was a major industry in North Carolina from the early eighteenth century until after the Civil War. On the eve of this conflict, Franklin County played a minor role in this aspect of the state's economy.According to The Encyclopedia of North Carolina (University of North Carolina Press, 2006), production of naval stores flourished in the Cape Fear Valley, especially in present-day Cumberland and Harnett counties.

3211.Poster winners honored at program
Franklin Soil & Water Conservation District held its 15th Annual Awards Program recently at Terrell Lane Middle School. Franklin County school students in grades three through six were recognized and received cash awards, certificates and ribbons for their accomplishments in the District Poster and Essay contest.  About 130 students, parents, teachers and principals attended the program to lend support.

3213.Old jail stabilization project well underway
The stabilization of the exterior of the old Franklin County jail on East Nash Street in Louisburg, begun in July 2016 by the Tar River Center for History and Culture Foundation, is well underway. Plans are to finish the project by the end of December.Constructed in 1874-1875 and heavily renovated in 1924-1925, the old jail housed inmates until 1975, when a new detention facility was completed on Market Street.

Thanks to a resident, a man and a mother, Franklin County sheriff’s deputies cited a man for leading an officer on a chase. According to a report by Det. John Whitman Jr., he was patrolling Bunn Elementary School Road when he came upon a man on a dirt bike in the middle of the road.

Louisburg High School has a new assistant principal following action Monday night by the Board of Education. Named to the vacant post was Ohio native Jeffrey Dolan who is currently a physical education teacher at Coats Erwin Middle School in Harnett County. Dolan developed an interest in school administration while enrolled in a graduate program at Kent State University in Ohio. Starting Dec. 4, he’ll get his chance to apply that interest as an assistant principal at Louisburg High School.

LOUISBURG -- The Louisburg Town Council took a brief break from routine business during its Monday night meeting to salute the "outstanding community service" of out-going Louisburg College President Mark La Branche. The council later appointed Capt. Jason Abbott as interim police chief. (See related story.) The resolution passed unanimously by the council said Dr. La Branche was being honored for his "unselfish service to the citizens of Louisburg and his dedication to providing unparalleled leadership to Louisburg College."

More students making up the grade

An estimated 15 percent more students are in summer school this year than last, with Terrell Lane Middle having close to a third of its population in remediation. Tougher EOG math standards are affecting schools similarly throughout North Carolina. “The state kind of hit us between the eyes, changing both the difficulty of the questions and the way the test is graded at the same time,” David Hawks, principal of Bunn Middle, said.

Calling the recently constructed Labyrinth “a symbol that will reflect the spirit and faith of this college for many years,” Louisburg College President Mark La Branche helped dedicate it on a chilly Saturday morning that was part of the school’s Homecoming Weekend. The Labyrinth, built in the brick sidewalk in front of the Louisburg College library, “has a depth of meaning beyond what we can describe,” La Branche said.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Five Franklin County teams qualified for the Class 2-A State Basketball Playoffs, but only two were remaining following Monday’s opening night of postseason competition. Both Bunn’s boys and girls, playing at home as part of a doubleheader, were able to come away with victories. BHS’ girls defeated Cedar Ridge (see story on page 10), while the boys claimed a 60-53 decision against Durham School of the Arts.

3249.Franklinton was home to private academies in 1850s
Franklinton, which was incorporated in 1842, three years after the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad reached what was first called Franklin Depot, grew quickly in the 1840s and 1850s.The new town attracted residents, businesses, churches, and schools. Two private academies, Franklinton Male and Female Institutes, flourished for a brief period in the mid-1850s.

3253.School board eyes state-mandated teacher bonus plan
After failing for the second-straight month to get the electronic voting component of its new “paperless board meeting” software to work, the Franklin County Board of Education set it aside Monday night and took the few formal votes needed during the meeting by voice vote.The rather routine meeting’s highlight was a presentation by Dr. Cheryl Benson, assistant superintendent for human resources, about the state-mandated bonus plan that is designed to reward some of the district’s top educators.

3255.Top county school administrators given two-year contract extensions
Franklin County School Superintendent Eddie Ingram and his administrative team were given two-year extensions on their contracts this week by the Franklin County Board of Education. In all cases, the contracts were extended through 2016 with no change in terms from their current contracts. Each will receive a 1.2 percent pay increase, the same as other school staff.

ROCKVILLE, MD. -- Things didn’t go as planned for the Louisburg College Lady Hurricanes during their road soccer matchup last Saturday against non-conference foe Montgomery-Rockville in the Maryland portion of suburban D.C. After playing a scoreless first half, the Lady Hurricanes gave up a quartet of unanswered goals of the closing 45 minutes of action and were defeated by a 4-0 margin.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects in a handful of break-ins. The afternoon of July 13, Jeffery Miller reported that someone broke into a property on Turtle Court near Youngsville. According to the report by Cpl. K. Gunter, suspects are alleged to have stolen three big-screen televisions, a laptop computer and entertainment equipment.

LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution Monday night designed to seek pay equity for veteran teachers -- and they are planning to share that resolution with other school districts in an attempt to build broad-based support for the change.The resolution asks that the state General Assembly rework its most recent budget, passed in December, 2023, and make the pay raises for veteran teachers more equitable.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects in an armed robbery. Brandon Hicks reported the evening of Jan. 5 that he had gone to the Franklinton park for a run when he said two black men near the playground area jumped him. According to the report by Dep. D. Barrett, the men came up from behind Hicks and hit him in the face until he fell on the ground.

GREENSBORO - Sure didn’t take long for a Franklin Countian to make an impact at Wednesday’s North Carolina Coaches Association East-West Football All-Star Game. Just one play, as a matter of fact. On the initial snap from scrimmage, Bunn’s Justin Rodgers roared through a gap and stopped a runner for a huge loss. The play set the tone for what was to come, as Rodgers and the East All-Stars, including Louisburg’s Hakeem Strickland, posted a 6-0 shutout over the West in the annual gridiron showcase at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Grimsley High School.

One of the earliest descriptions of Franklin County, written in 1810, provides valuable information about the geography, economy, and people of the area.In March of that year, Thomas Henderson and Dr. Calvin Jones, publishers of the Raleigh Star, printed a notice that solicited detailed descriptive essays about each county in North Carolina. They wished to publish these so that their readers would have an accurate picture of all sections of the state.Subsequent appeals later that year and in 1811 suggest that few such statements were forthcoming.

No sooner than the Franklin County Board of Education got organized for next year than it basked in good news in the form of an audit report that was called “as good as you can get.” The school board re-elected Paige Sayles as chairman and elected John May as vice chairman, setting the stage for next year. And then Mark Soticheck II, a CPA with the accounting form of Dixon Hughes of Raleigh, told the board that his firm was issuing a “clean, unqualified opinion” about the state of the school system’s books.

HENDERSON -- The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards have started the 2012-2013 men’s basketball season (the first under new head coach Mike Rotolo) with two wins and two losses. In the first regular-season contest (Nov. 1), VGCC lost to Louisburg College by a score of 101-55. The Hurricanes are the defending Region X champions and were recently ranked second in the nation in NJCAA Division II.

LOUISBURG -- Just days before prosecutors informed the courts that they would seek the death penalty against a Zebulon man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, attorneys for the victim's children filed a wrongful death lawsuit.Investigators allege Garry Yarborough killed Tracy Williams the afternoon of July 26 in a Franklinton shopping center parking lot.During a Rule 24 hearing on Aug. 27, Assistant District Attorney Ben Hunter informed Resident Superior Court Judge Robert Hobgood that the state was prepared to proceed with a capital case against Yarborough, giving Yarborough the services of two legal counsels.
