MARTIN J. OPYD SR.

LOUISBURG - Martin J. Opyd Sr., 94, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015 at his home in the company of family and friends.

He was originally from Chicago and a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict.

Surviving: his wife, Elizabeth Harper Opyd; sons, Walter (Nancy) of San Jose, Calif., and Daniel (Petra) of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Two other children, Elizabeth-Anne and Martin Jr., predeceased him.

Martin and Elizabeth celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past June. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, serving in a variety of posts in each organization and volunteering in many charitable initiatives throughout the decades.

He donated his body to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. A memorial service will be announced by Mount Zion Baptist Church of Louisburg when his cremated remains are returned to the family.
