MARY MITCHELL MURPHY
November 20, 1930 - April 24, 2020

LOUISBURG - Mrs. Mary Mitchell Murphy, 89, of Rocky Ford Road, died Friday, April 24, 2020 at her home. She was the daughter of the late William Frank and Mamie Glover Mitchell of Louisburg. Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Robert Jefferson Murphy, of Louisburg, and brother William Frank Mitchell Jr of Wilson. She was a political science and history teacher in the NC public school system for over 30 years. Mrs. Murphy was an elected member of the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation Board and a member of the of the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging from 2001-2008. She served as Vice-Chair of the Franklin County Democratic Party in 2014, and in 2015, she was recognized as Franklin County Democratic Woman of the Year. She was an active member of Louisburg Baptist Church.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia M. and Robert J. Will of Sanford; brothers and sister-in-law, Edwin and Joyce Mitchell of Raleigh, Sid Mitchell of Lawrenceville, GA; her granddaughter and husband, Jamie N. Deis and Thomas M. Deis of Hillsborough; grandson and wife, Patrick A. and Kristyn D. Will of Apex; great-grandchildren, Will, Olivia, and Luke Deis of Hillsborough.

Due to public health concerns related to the current pandemic, a memorial service will not be held at this time. When social distancing restrictions are lifted, a Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the Louisburg Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Louisburg Baptist Church, 302 N. Main St., Louisburg, NC 27549 or the UNC Covid-19 Response Fund.
