Seventeen honored at VGCC Medical Assisting pinning
Vance-Granville Community College held a pinning ceremony for its 2010 Medical Assisting program graduates on Aug. 5 at the college’s Franklin County Campus in Louisburg, where the program is conducted. As VGCC’s program is nationally accredited, graduates are now eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ (AAMA) certification examination to become Certified Medical Assistants.

FRANKLINTON -- Emily Regan didn’t know what to expect heading into her first match as the volleyball coach at Franklinton High School.
Now, she expects even more.
Regan’s club shined in her debut, rolling to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 victory against Southern Nash in Tuesday’s regular season opener at the FHS Gymnasium.

Jones has been at Bunn for 16 seasons, but rarely has the successful program had to rebuild as much as this fall, when the Ladycats must find a way to replace seven standout graduates from a 24-3 squad.

Safe Space hosts tourney
LOUISBURG -- The annual Safe Space Inc. Golf Tournament was held Aug. 13 at Green Hill Country Club.
All proceeds from the tourney went to support the services of Safe Space Inc., a domestic violence services organization.
This year’s winning foursome was Ricky Raynor, Ryan Raynor, Brian Johnson and Dan Edwards.

Taylor Martin, Class of 2012 at Elon University in Elon, was elected Student Government president for the 2010 – 2011 school year.
As president, Taylor is responsible for a six-figure budget, presides over the student senate meetings, is the liaison between the students and school administration, and conducts judicial hearings and grade appeals.

Deputies investigate theft of commode and other household items
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects who stole a kitchen sink.
And a bunch of other stuff, too.
A Knightdale construction company representative reported on Aug. 15 that someone stole the sink, refrigerator, dishwasher, a commode and 49 more pieces of household items from a property at 56 Hogwood Road.

County commissioners agreed to use bond money approved in a 2008 election to pay for a new modular building to house the Early College High School.
A public hearing on Monday night drew two residents on opposite sides of the fence, however, the board’s decision to use excess money from the $53 million school bond was unanimous.

The Franklinton Chapter of Rolling Thunder, a group committed to searching for and educating the community about prisoners of war and those missing in action, held a ceremony in remembrance of the 43 members of North Carolina’s military that are still POW/MIA.

LHS rising senior drowns in pool
A Louisburg High School rising senior drowned Monday in what investigators are calling a freak accident.
According to investigators, Markeith Kearney and a group of friends had gone to another friend’s house at 1512 East River Road to swim in a pool.
The friend was not home, but another man at the residence — Charles Mayo —warned the group that the pump was not working on the pool and water was dirty and advised them if they swam, it was their decision.

Pastuer in custody awaiting state Supreme Court decision on appeal
A Zebulon man will remain in custody while the state Supreme Court decides if it will hear an appeal.
A jury convicted Robert Lee Pastuer in April 2009 for his role in the fall 2006 death of his estranged wife, Narskelsky Pastuer.
In July, though, an appellate court ruled that prosecutors did not meet the burden of proof necessary to convict.
