Franklin County 4-H’er wins National
Jackie Dean spent the latter part of 2008 and the first part of 2009 preparing for one of her favorite parts of 4-H, the Hippology competition. This competition encompasses horse knowledge with horse judging and presentation skills. It is by far one of the most difficult competitions 4-H has to offer by way of horses.
“This past year brought the most exciting news I could have ever wanted to hear.  I had the opportunity to try out for the National Hippology team for North Carolina,” said Dean.

Nathan Ryan Bailey, a seventh-grade student at North Raleigh Christian Academy on Perry Creek Road in Raleigh, was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society on Feb. 16.  Membership is available in grade 7-9 and is based on scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.

KENLY -- When Chepirah Neal was injured late in the season, her absence was destined to leave the Bunn Ladycats at less than 100 percent -- even after she returned.
After missing several games, Neal and her teammates needed an adjustment period to get their rhythm and chemistry back.
The Ladycats kept winning in the Northern Carolina Conference, but the victories were much more hard-fought.

WAKE FOREST -- Even though his club continues to pile up the victories, Louisburg College men’s basketball coach John Meeks still wonders if the Hurricanes fully understand the level of defensive play needed in order to be successful in the postseason.
For Meeks, that theory was evident again Wednesday during a key Region X road game at Wake Tech Community College.

KENLY -- When Louisburg joined the Northern Carolina Conference in the off-season,  LHS Athletic Director Chris Davis indicated his glee with the fact that Franklin County rivalry games against Franklinton and Bunn would mean more than just bragging rights.
It hasn’t taken long for Davis’ desires to come to fruition. Also Louisburg’s boys hoops coach, Davis saw his club tangle with Bunn in Friday’s NCC Tournament Championship at North Johnston High School’s Gymnasium.

FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton High School will host a benefit basketball game on March 4 at 6 p.m. at the historic FHS Gymnasium.
Proceeds from the contest will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.
The matchup will feature the Franklinton High School faculty against FHS students.

News Update: TIGER fails to roar for 401 widening
North Carolina -- including Franklin County -- was virtually ignored in the latest round of stimulus funding that was announced Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
Franklin County commissioners, through a grant application prepared by the U.S. 401 Citizens Action Committee, were seeking $66 million to four-lane U.S. 401 from the Wake County line to Louisburg. That application received no funding.

Feds fine Sirchie $12.6 million
A Youngsville company was ordered to pay $12.6 million in fines for the violation of a plea agreement that barred illegal trades with China.
In 2005, Sirchie Fingerprint Laboratories — the corporate predecessor of what is now Sirchie Acquisitions — pled guilty to sending more than $1 million in banned equipment through a third party to Hong Kong.

Audit has areas of concern
Although the most recent audit of the town of Louisburg’s books found that “everything is materially correct,” there was a problem -- since remedied -- and some areas of concern.
That was the word from Dale Place of May and Place, certified public accountants, in Louisburg.
The main problem discovered was caused by the software that controls the town’s payroll system.

County sexual harassment policy revised
Franklin County commissioners approved revisions to its employee harassment policy mandated by a federal lawsuit settlement.
In October, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed  a lawsuit on behalf of Karen Dorrans, alleging that the county was responsible for retaliatory acts against Dorrans after she complained of sexual harassment.
