ZEBULON - Ann Baker Bullock, 65, of 6898 NC 39 Highway South, died Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Rex Healthcare. Ann was born February 5, 1945 in Franklin County to the late William Horace Baker and Frankie Mae Richards Baker. She retired as a supervisor in the License and Theft Division of the NC Department of Motor Vehicles. Following retirement, she enjoyed working at Chris’ Greenhouse and Garden Center. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all.

Students from the 2010-2011 Louisburg College freshman class, along with members of the faculty and staff, participated in a “Clean Sweep” project Monday morning from 8-11 am.
As part of their orientation, new students participate in Crossroads – a first-year experience course that introduces them to various aspects of college life and encourages service to the community.

FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton took on its share of heavyweights during action last Friday at the annual Tarboro Football Jamboree in Edgecombe County.
For the third consecutive year, the Red Rams headed back to Coach Clark Harrell’s hometown to meet the likes of SouthWest Edgecombe (expected to be in the mix for a Class 2-AA State Title), Tarboro (the defending Class 2-A State Champ) and North Edgecombe (expected to compete for a Class 1-AA State Title).

County schools receive favorable report from state
The annual North Carolina Department of Public Instruction ABC report for the 2009-2010 school year has been released and with that has come a favorable result for Franklin County Schools.
In comparison to the 2008-2009 school year, overall composite test scores in 11 of 14 schools that could be measured increased.

FCS graduation rate on the rise
The FCS graduation rate rose for the fourth consecutive year. In 2009-2010, 76.5 percent of FCS seniors graduated - a 2.3 percent increase over the year before.
While Supt. Eddie Ingram said he wanted the district to reach 80 percent, he was still pleased to see an improvement.

YOUNGSVILLE — Commissioners withdrew plans to adopt a yard sale ordinance, deciding to take a more genial approach to cleaning up the town.
At Commissioner Graham Stallings request, staff began looking into a policy to clean up yard sales in town back in June.

Early College building funding public hearing set for Monday
Franklin County residents will have a chance Monday night to say how commissioners should fund new classroom space for the Early College High School program.
Finance Director Chuck Murray said the most fiscally efficient way is to use bond money voters agreed to use for school improvements back in 2008.

Airport revenues discussed
Airport Manager Steve Merritt updated commissioners on two items that equal revenue at the airport.
First, Merritt gave commissioners their first peek at projected tax revenues at the airport — the result of a decision county commissioners made last spring, allowing the airport to recoup ad valorem taxes on aircraft based at the airport and funnel that money back into operations.

County’s economic news—not good, not bad
The August meeting of the Franklin County Economic Development Commission was pretty balanced – no really bad news but no really good news either.
Perhaps the best news, although still tentative, was the report from county Economic Development Director Ronnie Goswick that an alternative energy industry is looking at a site in the county -- and could eventually offer as many as 200 new jobs.
