A HALF CENTURY TOGETHER. Gary Carlton Faulkner and Connie Jo Gilliam Faulkner recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary alongside their family with lunch and cake. They were married on Nov. 10, 1974 in Louisburg, NC, where they also reside today. They have three daughters, Natalie, Carla Jo (Jonathan), and Whitney (Levi), and four grandchildren, Jackson, Perry, William, and Naomi.

1008.Church bus wreck
Members of a church community were recovering this week from an accident that crushed a church van. According to a report by Trooper T.W. Allen, Sandra Alston, 58, of N.C. 58, was driving a Perry’s Missionary Baptist Church van west on N.C. 561 when another vehicle drove into her path. According to Allen’s report, Mavis Burnette, 83, of Dorsey Road, was travelling east on N.C. 561 when she ran off the road to the right at about 5:45 p.m. on July 2.

1010.ON ITS SIDE
Both lanes of U.S. 401 were shut down for about a mile near Bennett Perry Road following a tractor-trailer wreck on Thursday morning. According to Trooper C.M. Garner, James Hales, 35, was traveling north on the highway when he ran off the road just before 8 a.m. The trailer turned onto its side, dumping its load of sand. Hales sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the wreck. He was cited for failure to maintain his lane.

Sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects in a couple of break-ins. First, Frieda Paredes reported on the afternoon of July 6 that someone broke into her home in the 1000 block of Tollie Weldon Road. According to the report by Dep. Kevin Perry, suspects apparently kicked open the back door to gain entry.

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County commissioners agreed to look at helping a community group turn an historic school into a community center.But, they stayed short of providing funding or officially committing to help.The Copeland-Perry School was built in the 1880s, serving African American students as a Rosenwald school -- one of a number of African American schools across the South built through the philanthropic efforts of Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears Roebuck.

1025.Youngsville police round up handful of DWI suspects
Youngsville police arrested a handful of DWI suspects, including a commissioner’s son. Logan C. Lancaster, 21, of Remington Court, was arrested during the early morning hours of Aug. 18 and charged with driving while impaired. According to the report by Officer A. Edwards, police had set up a license checkpoint at W. Main and N. Cross streets and Lancaster approached in a red pickup truck, driving through the stop.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested two people charged in a break-in. Dep. Kevin Perry reported he responded to a breaking and entering in progress at a property in the 1300 block of Clifton Pond Road to find a storage building door cracked and two people inside. A Louisburg man was sentenced to between 13 and 16 years after being convicted of killing Bunn teenager Marc Philippeaux. Authorities charged Antione Perry with first-degree murder after he and two other suspects were arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, 2005. Perry was convicted of firing the fatal shot that killed Philippeaux while he and about 150 other people celebrated a Bunn basketball victory at a house party.

A 15-year tradition of helping local foster children at Christmas has changed just a bit this year because of a huge retailer’s decision not to participate — but the need and the tradition of helping the children will continue in Franklin County. For a decade and a half the Franklin County Department of Social Services has had an “Angel Tree” where those wishing to help children could select an “angel” with all the information needed about a child.

LOUISBURG -- The second primary provided a reversal of fortune for two candidates who received the highest number of votes the first go around.Meanwhile, District 7 School Board member Paige Sayles received the most countywide votes in May and on Tuesday night."I am gratified by the trust the public has placed in me," Sayles said.

A Franklin County grand jury indicted four people charged with robbing a Franklin County man and stuffing him in a truck. In January, sheriff’s deputies arrested and charged Chad M. Batie, 28, Charles Perry Jr., 26,  and Nicholas Morris, 30, with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

State transportation staff tried to build a bridge of communication with Mitchners residents this week, but a new bridge across Buffalo Creek wont be done until next year. In June, rains from Tropical Storm Ernesto intensified rushing water underneath the roadway and wiped out a culvert that supports the integrity of the road.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating an apparent dispute that led to gunfire, but no injuries were reported. Michael Collins reported the evening of Dec. 29 that he had gotten an explicit text message from Michael Pryor about his ex-wife. Collins, according to the report by Dep. Kevin Perry, rode his motorcycle to the residence on Horace Baker Road to speak with Pryor, requesting that he leave him alone.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects who assaulted an older man during a robbery.Curlee Carlyle reported the evening of Jan. 24 that he was at his Carlyle Road home when a man wearing a toboggan knocked on his door. Carlyle didn’t know the man and denied him entry. Then, according to the report by Dep. George Perry, the suspect broke the window and tried to unhook the latch, but could not. He kicked open the door and demanded money.

BUNN -- One big inning was all it took for the homestanding Bunn Wildcats to get past Franklinton last Thursday evening at the BHS Baseball Field.Needing a victory to stay in a tie for first place in the Northern Carolina Conference, the Wildcats plated 10 runs in the bottom of the second stanza alone en route to defeating the Red Rams by a 13-3 margin.Spencer Brickhouse, known more for his bat skills, earned the mound victory for the Wildcats.
