Members of a church community were recovering this week from an accident that crushed a church van.
According to a report by Trooper T.W. Allen, Sandra Alston, 58, of N.C. 58, was driving a Perry’s Missionary Baptist Church van west on N.C. 561 when another vehicle drove into her path.
According to Allen’s report, Mavis Burnette, 83, of Dorsey Road, was travelling east on N.C. 561 when she ran off the road to the right at about 5:45 p.m. on July 2.

Both lanes of U.S. 401 were shut down for about a mile near Bennett Perry Road following a tractor-trailer wreck on Thursday morning. According to Trooper C.M. Garner, James Hales, 35, was traveling north on the highway when he ran off the road just before 8 a.m. The trailer turned onto its side, dumping its load of sand. Hales sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the wreck. He was cited for failure to maintain his lane.

Authorities charged Antione Perry with first-degree murder after he and two other suspects were arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, 2005.
