Supporters of recently suspended Cedar Creek Middle School Principal Brooke Wheeler gave the Franklin County Board of Education some free advice Monday night: Keep Ms. Wheeler on the job. Wheeler was suspended with pay in mid-May while school officials said they investigated a possible infraction that they say they cannot explain because of secretive state personnel laws.

LOUISBURG -- For more than five years, Franklin County has been focused on efforts to improve broadband access throughout the county. Those efforts continue.Through a $4 million Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) Grant, Brightspeed -- formerly CenturyLink and Lumen -- will begin deploying high-speed fiber-to-the-home internet in more than 1,400 locations in Franklin County. GREAT Grant Phase II award requires a $437,651 match from Brightspeed and a County match of $437,650.

2718.Franklinton business robbed
Franklinton police are looking for a suspect who robbed a business, possibly with a gun. According to investigators, a suspect entered the Dollar General at about 7:20 p.m. on Nov. 20 and approached a cashier who was working along a back aisle. The suspect, described as  a black man wearing a red, hooded top, demanded money from the cashier — placing his hand in her back giving her the impression he had a weapon.

The state Department of Transportation began advertising a project to repair a roadway washed out in June. In June, rains from Tropical Storm Ernesto created enough rushing water underneath West River Road at Buffaloe Creek to wipe out a culvert that supported the integrity of the road.

LOUISBURG -- A second-quarter barrage led to a happy homecoming Friday for the Louisburg Warriors. Leading by eight points after the initial frame, the Warriors erupted for four touchdowns the rest of the way before halftime. 2734.Remembering Pete Smith, a goal-oriented mechanic
Franklin Countians bid farewell recently to Atlas Cohen Smith -- far better known as Pete -- once a self-described "shade tree mechanic" who built a successful auto repair business that still carries his name.Variously described as a "swell person" who accomplished a lot, ambitious and, perhaps most of all, a hard worker who always tried to do his best, Smith, who died at 87, was well known around the community. He died Thursday, March 3, after a period of declining health. His full obituary appears elsewhere in this edition.

FRANKLINTON -- Town commissioners agreed to move forward with a rail project that, ultimately, could provide a recreational link to Louisburg.Louisburg completed its bike trail, from Depot Hill to Vance-Granville Community College in the spring of 2007.The goal was to eventually extend that trail all the way to Franklinton.

2747.Dozing driver, asleep at pump, wakes up to face drug charges
A Franklinton woman who fell asleep at the wheel was arrested on drug charges. According to investigators, Franklinton Officers Bennett Manson and A.J. Bishop responded to the Wilco Hess the evening of Jan. 4 after getting a call of a suspicious person. According to the report, a woman, later identified as Angelica Dickerson, was sitting in her vehicle at the pump for about 15 minutes when an employee called 911.

2753.Chicken-napped, right off the fence!
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects who apparently stole livestock.Karen Edwards reported the afternoon of March 25 that someone stole 24 chickens from a property in the 1600 block of Long Mill Road near Franklinton.According to the report by Dep. D.S. Wester, the chickens sit on the fence to roost at night and it’s believed that someone took the chickens the evening of March 23.

The United Way of Franklin County has awarded the 2011 Community Impact Grants. In all, 23 programs were approved for funding after they were reviewed, considered by six community panels and further reviewed by the UWFC Allocations Committee. Franklin County Commissioners held off on making a change to a text amendment that could pave the way for a community group to operate a halfway house. During the board’s regular scheduled meeting on Monday, planning staff presented the board with a text amendment proposal that would define group care facilities and restrict their locations.
