201.Writing history larger
Few of us remember what was said at our graduation. Sometimes the words spoken were not memorable but such was not the case when Vice President Joe Biden spoke to the graduating class of Wake Forest University. Biden’s plain-spoken rhetoric struck chords of truth and called forth the best in those who, charting a new course in life, urging the graduates to “take history in your hands and write it larger,” also adding “…we’re either going to fundamentally change the course of history, or fail the generations that come after us, because change will occur. Non-action is action. We’re either going to fundamentally revive our economy or we’re going to fall behind.”

275.Raising next generation is our most critical task
When a retired Army officer speaks at a public gathering, it’s not unusual to hear comments about freedom — and especially, the cost of freedom. For Americans, that’s a familiar refrain and we’d be surprised it if didn’t happen. And, you don’t exactly have to bleed Red, White and Blue to understand the value of freedom and the cost of both obtaining and protecting it.

283.About foreign students
First of all, I can very well identify with foreign students since I have been one myself. It was not easy for me to take courses, study for them, take tests, and pass the subjects without working very, very hard. I was not fluently proficient in the English language, which made it more difficult for me to study for tests. You know, we all look back at things we have done in the past and wonder how in the  world we ever did it. How did we accomplish what we set out to do? Most of the time our answer is “I do not know how I did it,” or just simply, “I am glad I was younger because I do not think I could do it now.”

284.Abundant sporting thoughts
If the beginning of fall football practice signifies the end of summer, then we’re up against it, aren’t we? Fall workouts begin in just 10 days for Franklin County rivals Franklinton, Bunn and Louisburg. Even with some heavy graduation losses -- and two coaching changes -- hopes are high at each of the schools. It will be interesting to see how things work out. But first, we have a few days left to enjoy before the heat-infested workouts and scrimmages begin.

BUNN -- Maybe the Bunn Ladycats can be a postseason factor after all. Bunn, in Benj Daniels’ first year as head coach, has gotten off to a slow start in 2012-13 -- thanks in part to the graduation of several key performers, along with a brutal early schedule. That’s why Bunn’s reward was two-fold following Thursday’s 55-49 victory over Kinston in the first round of the Bunn Christmas Basketball Tournament.

290.Take it from these two Franklin grads: the best is yet to come

It was one of the most prestigious moments in my life. There were two options. Option one: I walk the tightrope, don’t fall and become a successful high school graduate.
