Since 1994, 18 people in Franklin County have lost their lives to domestic violence, according to Safe Space. That’s 18 too many, said Safe Space board member Darrell Perry. “That’s too many lives,” Perry said, reading a list of the 81 victims of domestic violence who have been murdered in the state this year.

LOUISBURG -- Federal investigators weren't expected to engage in a significant probe into a single-engine plane crash last week.Authorities responded to a plane crash in a wooded area off Bennett Perry Road near Springfield Angus Farm the afternoon of July 5.The pilot, identified as Maurice Evans, 45, of Louisburg, was able to walk away from the crash.

BUNN -- As he walked off a frigid field in Reidsville back in 2005, Coach David Howle wondered if his Bunn Wildcats would ever make it back to the Final Four of the Class 2-AA State Football Playoffs.After all, that was the first time Bunn had traveled that far in the postseason, only to fall to a loaded Reidsville contingent that eventually won the state title.Howle would retire four years later, then unretire in 2013, all the while hoping his program had one more magical run left.

BUNN -- Cedar Creek’s boys and Terrell Lane’s girls took home top honors on the middle school level during the annual The Franklin Times Franklin County Track and Field Meet. The event was held April 25 at the Bunn High School Football Field. Cedar Creek successfully defended its middle school boys team crown with 71 points -- a mark that gave the Jaguars a repeat in convincing fashion.

BUNN -- Town commissioners are considering some pay raises, as long at it doesn't put their tax rate out of whack.Commissioners and staff met last week during a session, poring over proposed revenues and expenses for the 2018-19 fiscal year.For the most part, Police Chief Joe King wants to keep his spending status quo, but he did ask commissioners to consider raising pay for his part-time officers and the town's school resource officer.

FRANKLINTON -- Free-throw shooting in pressure situations has been a long-time issue for the Louisburg High School boys basketball team -- even going back to when current head coach Dontae Lassiter was a player for the Warriors. But the Warriors enjoyed plenty of charity-stripe success Tuesday, and the result was a clutch victory over host Franklinton in a key Northern Carolina Conference matchup at the new FHS Gymnasium.

Sister Lucy Mae Alston Wright was recently recognized by the Order of the Eastern Star, Leading Light Chapter #507 in Centerville. She is the only remaining charter member in the chapter. The program was held on Sunday, Sept. 24, during the morning worship service at Perry’s Missionary Baptist Church. She joined the chapter in 1950.

FRANKLINTON -- The State Highway Patrol said speed was a factor in an accident that killed one Franklinton High student and injured another on Tuesday.According to authorities, Timothy H. Coley, 18, was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta east on Cedar Creek Road at about 7:30 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle.It traveled across the westbound lane and off the shoulder, hitting a fence near Hicks Road.

Louisburg High School Class of 1974 celebrated its 40th Class Reunion recently, at the Embassy Suites in Cary. About 63 people were in attendance. The kickoff event for the weekend was a meet and greet on Friday night. Some classmates had not seen each other in over 40 years. A banquet meal was served Saturday night, followed with entertainment by classmates. After the entertainment, it was a night of laughter, dancing and good times.

The 1957 class of Mills High School had their 56th reunion on May 7 at Maple Springs Baptist Church.  The classmates gathered at 2 p.m. to reminisce, look at old school pictures and welcome their guests.  Eddie Stallings, mascot of their class, and Howard Stallings, principal, and their wives attended.  Bobbie Currie, glee club director, and her daughter attended for the first time.  At 5 p.m., dinner was served followed by a program led by co-chairmen Clint Chaney, Wilbur and Shirley Southall.

A Franklin County resident has called into question the leadership of a community group that’s proposing to turn an old school property into a halfway house-style rehab center for the recently incarcerated. Franklin County officials sold the Gold Sand Elementary School property, formerly the Perry School, to the Perry’s School Alumni Association in 2006, with the stipulation that it be used for community events and purposes that continue to exhibit the cultural and historical significance of the facility.
