BUNN -- Bunn High School hosted a tri-match wrestling event on Tuesday against Northern Carolina Conference opponents Louisburg and Roanoke Rapids.The Wildcats claimed both events, including a 45-33 decision over Louisburg in a renewal of the schools' backyard rivalry at the Bunn Dome.Bunn, coached by Parker Haake, won the final two matches by forfeit over Louisburg to pull away in what had been a close event to that point.

Franklin Regional Medical Center has initiated a medical response team designed to address medical needs before they become critical. The hospital set up a Rapid Response Team at the beginning of the month. The program allows any and all hospital staff to notify the team of a non-intensive care patient’s condition if they feel or think the patient is heading toward a more serious medical emergency.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Bunn found the historic Chockoyott Country Club to its liking during the first 18-hole round of competition this spring in Northern Carolina Conference golf action. That was especially true for freshman William Lewis, who carded an amazing 73 to earn medalist honors. 2619.L-burg project beats estimates
LOUISBURG -- Town officials got a little good news Monday night when the low bid for a SCADA System at the town's sewer plant came in well under estimates.The system, which includes controls that monitor the treatment plant, came in at $169,300, about $21,000 less than estimates.The town quickly accepted the bid and awarded the contract to Custom Controls Unlimited of Raleigh.The project was sent out for bids earlier, although the town did not receive enough proposals in April to award a contract.

LOUISBURG -- Despite competing without five suspended players -- and having no chance to make the postseason -- the Northwest Halifax Vikings still competed like a football team on a mission Friday against host Louisburg. They may not have raised $57 million, but children at Franklinton’s United Methodist Day Care did raise spirits. Relief efforts continue for the people of Haiti, a Caribbean nation still reeling from a devastating earthquake that’s killed 150,000 and has countless others scrambling for life-saving rations. On Friday, celebrities organized a global benefit that, as of Tuesday, had raised more than $58 million.

Franklin County has been chosen to receive $7,103 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. Samiyah Ke’Shion Edgerton has been chosen as the reigning Miss Nu Epsilon for 2012-13. The ninth annual cotillion was held recently at the Interdenominational Headquarters Building in Franklinton. She is the daughter of Ke’Shion and Sherree Edgerton of Louisburg and a fourth-grader at Royal Elementary School. She was sponsored by Geraldine Manley and Faye Weiner.

2633.Fire allowed to burn out
FRANKLINTON -- For the most part, Franklinton fire crews could only watch as a piece of logging equipment burned. Units were dispatched to what was reported as a farm equipment fire just after 11 a.m. on Feb. 28.When crews responded to the 63 Mann Street address, essentially a road that dead ends into a long, muddied path, they found a plume of black smoke in the distance -- about a mile off the road. According to those on scene, a piece of logging equipment had caught fire.

Earlier this year, the Franklin County Department of Aging lost its long-time director. Tuesday was the last day for the supervisor of its Louisburg Center, Christy Southall. 2640.Machete attack; home invasion
FRANKLINTON — Police are investigating two brutal attacks, one on the street and another in a home. First, Marcus Earl Dozier, 23, was cut by a machete during a street fight on July 7. Three days later, police were looking for two suspects accused of breaking into a home on Allen Avenue, shooting into the house and injuring one man. Investigators don’t believe the incidents are related.

LOUISBURG -- Franklinton voters elected a new mayor and new commissioner and Louisburg voters installed a new council member in the only two contested municipal races in Franklin County on Tuesday night.Franklinton Commissioner Art Wright won his rematch with Mayor Elic Senter, besting the two-term mayor with 212 votes to 187.Wright, who lost to Senter in 2007, said campaigners carried him to victory.

2654.Early voting gets off to slow start in county
LOUISBURG -- Just more than 2 percent of registered voters had cast an early ballot in Franklin County by press time.According to the State Board of Elections, 1,220 voters had cast an early ballot by press time -- Wednesday morning.At last check, there were 56,165 registered voters in the county.Up until Feb. 28, those voters have a chance to cast an early ballot in the primary. Election day is March 3.

An attorney for a deputy charged with killing another deputy wants the county’s prosecutor removed from the case alleging impropriety. Ben Barrick was indicted last spring on charges that he was responsible for the May 2004 helicopter crash that killed Deputy Ted Horton.

Narcotics officers made two drug arrests in a week’s time. The morning of Nov. 20, officers, with the aid of a tactical unit, executed a search warrant at a home in the 500 block of Earlie Collins Road.
