301.A quick, unforgettable trip to home land
How wonderful it is to relive the past and see loved ones once again, even after 50 years. That was my experience as I met 22 of my 33 classmates in Curacautin, in the region of La Araucania, Chile. There were about 150 retired teachers at the reunion, and  my class of 1961 celebrated 50 years since graduation.

WAKE FOREST--Brooklyn Nicole Lynam was born September 25, 1992, in Raleigh, NC, to Larry Van Lynam and Brenda Lilly Lynam. Brooklyn was smart, beautiful, funny, daring and stubborn. She was so inquisitive and had a smile that would light up any room. Brooklyn was a wonderful daughter, sister and friend. She graduated from NC State with degrees in Wood Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering. After graduation she moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee after accepting a job at Shaw Industries as a process engineer. She thrived at her new job and was named 2018 STEP Ahead Award Emerging Leader. She also enjoyed volunteering and mentored children in a FIRST Robotics team, The Fighting Mongooses. Under her guidance, the team exceeded previous records and won 2nd place at a regional competition. Many of the students were living in adverse home conditions, and by mentoring these children, she exposed them to new opportunities and positive outlets.

JACKSONVILLE, AR— Shelley Lee Kelly, 68, of Jacksonville, AR died Jan. 24, 2014.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force who had two tours of duty in Vietnam. He served as a Senior Master Sergeant for 23 years until retirement. Following this, he returned to the LRAFB as civilian instructor with the Lockheed Martin Corporation.

On this particular day, many visitors from other colleges were invited to participate and attend the many sessions being offered on what a college can do to retain students in order to get their diplomas. Outside of the guest speakers, over 130 faculty members were present, and members of the faculty and administration were presenters.

342.Louisburg man trained as a medic
Hospitalman Carson Sayles completed Field Medical Service School training recently at Camp LeJeune.He spent eight weeks of training with the U.S. Marine Corp as a combat medic, with training in combat casualty care and combat medicine, along with weapon and tactical training. Prior to his Field Medical/Combat Medicine training, Sayles spent 12 weeks training as a US Navy hospital corpsman in San Antonio, Texas, after completing basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois.

350.School board begins crafting policy on religious practices
Beginning with a template about religion in the schools supplied by the North Carolina School Board Association, the Franklin County school board’s policy committee began crafting its own policy Monday night, adding bits and pieces from both the Buncombe and Caldwell county policies to the proposed document. The policy committee will meet at least one more time to finalize the policy before releasing it for public review and comment.

357.Elementary school lunch prices hiked
Parents of elementary school children in Franklin County public schools will pay a tad bit more for lunch next year following action by the school board Monday night. Currently, lunchroom meals for elementary school children cost $2 but that will climb to $2.25 next year.
