It took more than 200 years for a Louisburg native to be recognized for his service in arguably one of the greatest expeditions this country has known. In fact, it took two more days than expected. Members of the state Highway Historical Marker Program, the state Office of Archives and History and the Carolina Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Heritage Foundation met on Saturday for a dedication and ceremony to unveil an historic marker in honor of Richard Warfington, the only North Carolinian on the 1804-1806 expedition to the west.

SPRING HOPE -- A multiple-agency investigation into the death of an 18-year-old Spring Hope man continues as his family plans funeral arrangements.Amir Keyshawn Hinnant was reported missing to the Wilson Police Department on Feb. 24, according to a copy of the missing person's report, which said he had been last seen at 1 p.m. Feb. 24 at a home in the 600 block of Vance Street East. A social media post said his family had not seen him since some time earlier. Hinnant's white car was also gone.

If recent debates are any indicator, few will watch the three events and those who do will not learn much. The Youngsville Heat recently took first place in the 8-U Division at the Sixth Annual Grand Slam Super Regional AAU Baseball Tournament in Granville County. In the championship game in Oxford, the Heat defeated the NCDB River Cats 14-1 to receive rings. In four tourney games, the Heat outslugged opponents by a combined score of 74-30.

The Youngsville Heat continued its successful season on May 14-15 by winning the Top Gun Fifth Annual Battle For The Bats in Knightdale. The Heat won two bats, a team wagon and a paid berth to the summer and winter nationals, along with the winter world series. The club also received medals and a team plaque. Youngsville went 3-1 at the event, including a 19-8 decision over Wendell in the championship game of the prestigious event.

998.Couple sentenced for insurance fraud, swindling elderly woman
A Louisburg man and Nashville woman were sent to jail for their roles in swindling an elderly woman out of her life savings. Superior Court Judge Richard Baddour Jr. sentenced Aaron Pittman, 56 to between 96 months and 125 months in jail and ordered the Louisburg man to pay $122,000 in restitution. The judge also sentenced Mildred Dew, 58, to between 13 months and 16 months in prison and five years of probation on March 3, following a trial in Granville County Superior Court.
